Disappointing Experience – Poorly Handled, Uninspiring, and Not Worth the Price.
We had a very frustrating experience with this tour company, booked via GetYourGuide, and unfortunately we wouldn’t recommend them to others.
Our day started with a planned walking tour of Cannes at 10:30am. At 9:44, just 44 minutes before the start time, we received a WhatsApp message from the guide informing us that the tour was cancelled due to an unforeseen cancellation. We were already on the train heading to Cannes without any preparation as we had a guide booked. According to the usual 24-hour cancellation policy, the company would have already received full payment from the person who dropped out – so it’s difficult to understand why the tour wasn’t run anyway.
We expressed our disappointment, but were simply told it was “beyond their control.” The guide apologised, but there was no attempt to find an alternative solution, make up for the poor handling, or salvage the experience in any way. It felt careless and dismissive.
Since we were already en route to Cannes, we decided to make the most of it and ended up using ChatGPT to create our own self-guided walking tour. It turned out to be informative, flexible, and something we’ll likely use again – it was reliable, detailed, and didn’t cancel last minute.
In the evening, we had a food tasting tour booked in Antibes, only to discover that the guide was the same person from the cancelled morning tour. She did apologise again, but when we reiterated how disappointed we were with the short-notice cancellation, she simply repeated that it was beyond her control.
Unfortunately, the Antibes food tour didn’t make up for the rocky start.
For £83 per person, we received: One glass of absinthe. Three glasses of wine, a few slices of charcuterie and cheese shared between the group. One ramekin of peppers and garlic per person, plus one ramekin of vegetables and one of beef bourguignon to share, soca and one glass of wine each.
It didn’t feel special, and certainly not worth the price. What was more disappointing was the guide’s attitude. At the second stop, the waiter had no idea we were coming. We were then told we were early and had to come back in 20 minutes, during which the guide suggested we just “go shopping.” There was no effort to engage or use the time meaningfully.
Throughout the tour, she kept her distance, often sitting apart from the group and using her phone. She asked us once if we liked the wine, but there was no follow-up. It felt like she was doing the bare minimum, more as a side job than a passionate host proud to share local cuisine and culture. That human connection, which makes food tours so memorable, was completely missing.
The highlights of the tour were:
The food itself, while small in quantity, was tasty. The lovely owner at the final venue, who was warm, welcoming, and shared her story. A fellow guest – a costume designer working at the Cannes Film Festival – who was engaging and fascinating to talk to.
All in all, this felt like poor value for money, both in what we received and how it was delivered. If the company is relying on guides who don’t speak the local language, don’t engage with guests, and don’t seem interested in the experience they’re providing, then they should reconsider their offering.
As people who love exploring local food cultures wherever we travel, from street food in Asia to wine tastings in Tuscany, we’ve experienced incredible food tours led by passionate, knowledgeable guides who truly love what they do. Unfortunately, this company fell far short of that standard.
We will definitely not be using or recommending this...
Read moreWe had high hopes for the Antibes Provençal Food Tour—what looked like a charming, locally-run food tour, but unfortunately we left disappointed and still hungry.
The experience started off oddly at an absinthe bar where we were offered a small glass of absinthe and a single cracker with tapenade. The second stop didn’t even know we were coming, so we were given a bottle of wine by our guide to make up for it. The third and final stop was the only place where we actually tried some local food, like bouillabaisse and calissons, but the portions were tiny and didn’t come close to making it a full meal. We ended up having to go out and buy dinner afterward.
While our guide was friendly, he hadn’t lived in Antibes very long and some of the stories and “facts” he shared felt a bit improvised or incomplete.
We had also indicated a gluten-free dietary restriction when booking. We completely understand that gluten-free options may be limited or unavailable on a tour like this, but there was no mention of it at all during the experience. It left us wondering why dietary information is even requested if it’s not going to be acknowledged or accommodated.
It’s a shame, because the idea behind the tour is great. But between the lack of actual food, the lack of coordination, and the high price point, we couldn’t recommend...
Read moreLOVED this tour! I was lucky enough to be the first tour of the season so I was spoiled with 2 wonderful, fun loving and knowledgeable guides, Cedric and Johanna. They provided me with an excellent historical overview as well as some of the top sites of the region on e-bikes with stops along the way. Additionally, as a foodie, they made some great recommendations for local eateries. The e-bikes were easy to use, had lots of power for the uphill portions, in which I didn't have to work too hard being out of shape since COVID. What To Do Riviera tours is so awesome, I signed up for two other tours with them, one in Antibes and the other in Monaco. They have such a good variety of tours, including tasting tours, to choose from that I've recommended them to all of my friends who are traveling to the area in the upcoming months. Communication was very easy via email prior to the tour and then upon arrival Antibes, via WhatsApp. I wouldn't hesitate to book with them again in the future. Thank you Cedric and Johanna, you made my stay extra...
