Adjoining the imposing Cathedrale Notre Dame is the 14th-century Bishop’s Palace, the former residence of Grenoble’s bishops. No longer used as a bishop’s palace, it now houses the small but superb Musee de l’Ancien Eveche, a history museum that contains unique pottery pieces excavated out of the Roman-era crypt that spreads out below the cathedral square. The vaulted building itself is worth a visit for its simple but provoking architecture. The highlight is unquestionably the 4th-century underground baptistery which still accommodates the original baptismal font formerly used for the baptism of adult converts on Easter night. Remnants of intact sections of old Roman walls can be examined in the adjoining crypt. The highlights of the exhibits in the museum are: (i) the bronze Statuette de Venus that dates back to the second century (ii) a unique pottery amphora known as the ‘cruche’ dating back to the first century (iii) an artistic threesome composition that dates back to 1968, made in recognition of the Jeux Olympiques de Grenoble (iv) a 17th-century world-renowned oil-on-canvas portrait of Claudine de Berenger Entrance to the museum is free. Entrance is through the gate on Rue Tres-Cloitres, right behind...
