Le Tacos de Lyon - Notre Dame — Restaurant in Grenoble

It was August 7, 2010 when I first visited Le Tacos de Lyon, a summer Sunday night. It was my first week at this new city, a new chapter in my life, but I had already made a lot of friends, most of them as Brazilian as myself, of course. At that time, August in Grenoble was a land of Chinese and Brazilian students taking French classes before the school year started. As I said, it was my first week, seven days filled with the joy of discovery, of getting to know the city, of making new friends, of learning a new language, of traveling around to medieval towns during the weekend, all of which culminated in that moment, a moment that in Brazil we call "the Fantastico hour". Here I need to pull the thread so you can better understand the feeling entailed by this expression. "Fantastico" in this case is not an expression of amazement, it rather refers to a news and variety show in Brazilian television, which airs every Sunday night, and was a staple in most of Brazilian homes during the 90s and 00s. Not so much now, although it's still on air. The "Fantastico hour", then, or any variation over that expression, is that cyclic feeling you can only get on a Sunday night, a dreadful yet fulfilling sentiment that the weekend is over, and tomorrow morning there are obligations to which you have to return. A torrent of thoughts and emotions rush to your brain forcing you to conciliate the ecstasy and freedom you have experienced during the weekend with the unavoidable sadness derived from the imminent arrival of a Monday, all triggered by the well-known opening song of Fantastico, and marinated with a bit of news and the newest videoclip of a pop song. A true torturous and satisfactory moment. On that August 7th soirée, when me and my group of friends arrived from our first European weekend escapade, our fatigued bodies met our empty pantries, and we all pondered: what shall we dine when there is no supermarket to shop from, no money in our student-y pockets and all we could feel were the leftovers of euphoria? "I know a place", said Samuel, non-chalantly. "Tasty, inexpensive, and I know it opens on Sunday night because I was there last week." Keep in mind that in 2010 we didn't have all of the world's information at our pockets, we had to rely in word-of-mouth like the Mayans and Aztecs. We didn't have Google Maps or similar apps to give us a hint of what to expect, so we were fully aware that we could regret that decision, but on we went, tramway-crossing the city until we arrived at the Notre Dame cathedral vicinity. And of all the feelings we felt that evening, dear reader, I assure you that regret was not one of them. There was a hinch of an "after-party decadent food" vibe in that place's tacos that struck a cultural chord in our Brazilian hearts. We fell in love with the food and the place, and we could not fall out of it. From that day on, when our party fatefully gathered at the end of every Sunday afternoon, there was no question to be made, there was no pantry to be harvested nor stoves to be lit. No matter how many we were, either 2 or 15 people, we would take the tramway to Notre Dame and take a seat at Tacos de Lyon. It became our own tradition, our own Fantastico hour, when we would rejoice over our weekend and dread over our classes for the following week, and marinate these feelings less with football matches outcomes and more with our thoughts, our glee, our lame jokes, our camaraderie, and Andalouse sauce. Nowadays, Le Tacos de Lyon has refurbished its visual identity, they have expanded, they added big flat screens with videoclips or sport matches, and self-ordering totems. The vibe has changed. Le Tacos de Lyon have changed. But so have we, and I am glad we did. We all left Grenoble and created new traditions with new people. But whenever I go back to the capital of the alps, I make sure to try one of them tacos again, even if it is not a Sunday night. Le Tacos de Lyon - Notre Dame is located at one of the most central places in Grenoble. Their sandwiches and French Tacos are extremely delicious. In order to place your order they are using the same system that big fast-food companies are using, the order via the big screen way. There is nothing working with that but this makes me feel a little bit out of connections zone and the whole service is impersonal. That’s the reason why I gave 4 stars instead of five. We have visited the Tacos de Lyon in December 2022 after a evening at a cinema with the kids. Usually we have tacos once or twice per month from local fast foods.
