I visited the Gare Saint Sauveur specifically to see the exhibition "Afriques Capitales," curated by Simon Njami. The entire assemblage was excellent - with a deeply thought-provoking selection of recently created contemporary sculptures, paintings, photographs and installations, all addressing themes related to the complexities and precarities of urban life. Architecturally, Njami made very good use of the space, and the video installation by the artists MWANGI HUTTER (aka Ingrid Mwangi and Robert Hutter) shown in real time (with the appearance of slow motion and layered film montage) from inside the alcoves of the open railway carriages was both intriguing and highly sensual. I was also delighted to see the textile sculptures by internationally renowned artists such as Abdoulaye Konate and El Anatsui. Read moreAn interesting art centre in a converted station in tge city of Lille, Northern France. Five of us spent a good 3 hours here and there was plenty to see and participate in. The bar/ restaurant had a lively, relaxed atmosphere. It is obviously the local place to meet friends and family. Although we did not eat there, we did drink good draught biere blonde. It is a place for all age ranges. We visited the urban farm on site, made african bracelets, played with lego, saw a photography exhibition and watched performance art taking place. Exhibitions, art events, music in all varieties you name. It is an open, dynamic, multi- and intercultural place that succeeds in mingling French café and Anglo-American bar and pub culture.
