Notre-Dame de la Garde in Marseille is an absolute must-visit and deserves all the praise it gets! Perched high above the city, this basilica offers breathtaking panoramic views of Marseille, the Mediterranean Sea, and the surrounding landscapes. The view alone is worth the trip, but the church itself is a masterpiece. The stunning architecture, with its intricate mosaics and detailed design, is awe-inspiring both inside and out. The interior is just as impressive, with vibrant mosaics and ornate details that reflect the deep history and devotion associated with this sacred place. The atmosphere inside is peaceful, offering a moment of reflection amidst the busy city life below. The climb to the top, whether by foot or via a convenient bus ride, is rewarding. Along the way, you get to experience the changing perspectives of the city, which adds to the overall experience. The history behind Notre-Dame de la Garde, as a symbol of protection for sailors and the people of Marseille, makes it even more meaningful. The staff and volunteers were friendly and helpful, making the visit seamless. Whether you’re religious or simply appreciate history and architecture, Notre-Dame de la Garde is a must-see. Five stars for this iconic and beautiful landmark!

Basilique Norte-Dame is one of the central figures in Marseille. You can see it from everywhere. Walked to the top of the hill this church the climb was challanging but the view at the top spectacular! It’s worthy. You can get 360 degrees view of the entire city from there. Mediterranean blue ocean, Old port, Chateau d’if castle island, Frioul island, Mucem and stadium and so many buildings and houses. It’s beautiful inside the church. The church has very interesting interiors including lots of paintings and photos from ships that were lost from here. Decent gift shop selling religious items and many photos about City Of Marseille. You can also see bullet marks on the exterior from the battle at retook this site from the Germans at the end of WWII. On the way up near the church there is a tank on the street which is telling you about this war history. I took some photos street view on the way down from the church. Must see if you’re in Marseille.

You can visit this in a regular bus, or in a toy train! While the bus is more efficient, the toy train, as a tourist is much fun. You can take the train from Marseille Vieuw Port, and at this time it is EUR 10 per person. It is a 30-minute trip up the hill where you are dropped off. You can then take time to visit the church (crypt and basilica), go around the area with impressive views of Marseille all around - both towards the city as well as towards the bay. On your return, you can wait in line for the toy train and join the next one that comes. If visiting on a Sunday, be cognizant of the timings of the mass - once it starts, you are not allowed to enter the church until it ends (normally 60 - 75 minutes) and if you are inside, you are not allowed too exit - you can use this time to pray or observe the inside with more care.

Beautiful church nestled on top of Marseille. Amazing architecture and city views. Came here around sunset and got some amazing views of the city. Had a lovely time here, unfortunately it was closed and we could visit inside. This is a must see while in the city. Notre-Dame de la Garde (literally: Our Lady of the Guard), known to local citizens as la Bonne Mère (French for 'the Good Mother'), is a Catholic basilica in Marseille, France, and the city's best-known symbol. The site of a popular Assumption Day pilgrimage, it was the most visited site in Marseille. It was built on the foundations of an ancient fort at the highest natural point in Marseille, a 149 m (489 ft) limestone outcropping on the south side of the Old Port of Marseille.

Absolutely beautiful views looking down to the City Of Marseille. It is very busy there so be warned, you can take the stairs up to the Basilica or fortunately there is a lift! There are toilets that is €1 to enter. You can get to the Basilica multiple ways! There is a bus #60, a land train (€10 for adults/ €5 for kids) that takes you to the car park of the Basilica. Plenty of car park spaces. There are taxis waiting in the car park, that can take you to wherever after your visit but I highly recommend an Uber as you have a set price already, while taxi drivers around Marseille charge whatever they feel like. They have a bar at the Basilica that opens in the afternoon to watch the beautiful sunset!
