I have just come off a 7 week stay at the NH Marseille hotel and can honestly say it is the worst experience I have ever had in a hotel. The choice of hotel was provided for me through the company I was working for but after my time there I will not be making a conscious choice to stay in any of their hotels.

The staff were incredibly indifferent and uncooperative at many stages of my stay. On arrival we were told that there was very little chance of a room change to me and my colleague and that if we wanted to see any new rooms it would need to be after 10am on a weekday - not something possible when we were working. We asked that due to the length of our stay we would like to be sure we had a room that we were comfortable with but the staff were blatantly unaware of this.

Room service most nights refused to answer the phone for any order requests and closed at weekends; the bar was regularly unstaffed, not fully stocked and closed at irregular hours. I once waited 15 minutes at an empty bar to be served only to then be asked to wait another few minutes before they could make me a drink when someone did come over.

The cleaning staff were inconsistent and personal items I had purchased were removed from my room but glasses from drinks I had taken to my room that did belong to the hotel were left in my room for days despite me moving them to the bathroom in an attempt to show I wanted them taken out. Items removed included a bottle of shaving foam in the first two weeks that was never returned as well as well as a set of Union Jack handle cutlery, purchased by myself for evenings when I wanted to eat my own food as something so distinctive I felt no one would think it belonged to the hotel. When I reported it missing the next morning I was told by a receptionist who rolled their eyes to simply ‘take another from the dining room’. It was only after I found a picture online similar to what I had bought when she agreed to have them found and returned as they clearly did not belong to the hotel. The dressing gown I had to request in the first week as one was not provided in the room was taken after a few days and never replaced with a new one.

I had a particular interaction with a receptionist in which he laughed at me when I said my cutlery had been taken from my room and not returned for a second time and on a separate occasion even verbally threatened me with violence when I was collecting my laundry after making it clear I did not wish to interact with him anymore.

To think that this is a 4 star hotel is truly disappointing and I will actively discourage anyone from thinking of booking with the NH group in any of their locations because of my experiences.
