Legendary! There is a legend associated with both the location and the construction of the magnificent Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. After King Mirian III converted in 337, on the advice of St. Nino, he had a church built at the confluence of the Kura (Mtkvari) and Aragvi. This church was built on top of Sidonia's grave. According to legend, Sidonia's brother Elias bought Jesus' robe which he wore during his crucifixion, and which he showed to his us after returning to Georgia. When Sidonia grabbed the robe, she died on the spot from the intense emotions, and since the robe could no longer be removed from her hands, she was buried with the robe and all. A Lebanon cedar was planted on her grave, which St. Nino had centuries cut down to make beams for the construction of the church. One of the seven beams had supernatural powers and rose into the sky. After St. Nino had prayed all night, the magic beam descended back to earth and was used for the construction of the cathedral. It was further said that from this seventh column flowed a sacred liquid that cured people of all diseases, hence the Georgian name for the church: sveti ("pillar") tskhoveli ("life-giving") cathedral. However, there is no point in looking for this wooden pillar, because the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral has been damaged several times in its long existence by invading peoples and by earthquakes. The current church building was built between 1010 and 1029 according to a design by the architect Arsukidze and is one of the most beautiful churches of the Georgian golden age of church architecture (which is why the cathedral was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994).
