KirchnerHAUS Aschaffenburg — Attraction in Aschaffenburg

Disappointing: only one Kirchner sketch.

Firstly, I'm a big admirer of expressionism and Kirchner in particular. I spend a lot of my time visiting galleries and museums, having visited around fifty in the last twelve months. I enjoy cultural institutions as a whole, but I have never before thought that one would be better closed.

Before visiting I inquired as to whether original works were on display, and was told there were exhibitions. Apparently there are sometimes exhibitions, but when there are not, only one Kirchner original is on display. It is a graphite portrait, showing none of the typical vibrant colours or carnal subjects for which Kirchner is famous. The sketch is not in good condition.

To add to my disappointment I was informed by the staff that original works could be viewed at the nearby palace Schloss Johannisburg. Only prints were on view in the palace.

I suggest Kirchnerhaus, where the artist only resided until the age of four, be used once more as housing.

Ein echtes Kleinod in Aschaffenburg! Das KirchnerHAUS ist ein sehr charmantes, kleines Museum im Geburtshaus des Künstlers Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Es liegt etwas unauffällig, aber ein Besuch lohnt sich jedes Mal. Die wechselnden Ausstellungen sind sorgfältig kuratiert, immer mit Bezug zu Kirchner und seinem Werk – dabei aber abwechslungsreich und mit viel Liebe zum Detail gestaltet. Die Atmosphäre im Haus ist besonders, fast familiär, und das Gebäude selbst sehr schön renoviert.
