Cochem’s Market Square (Marktplatz) is a delightful blend of history, architecture, and vibrant local life. Nestled in the heart of the old town, it’s a must-visit spot for anyone exploring this charming Moselle River town.

The square is surrounded by beautifully preserved half-timbered houses, some dating back to the 17th century, showcasing the region’s traditional architecture . At its center stands the Saint Martin’s Fountain (Martinsbrunnen), featuring a bronze statue from 1935 depicting St. Martin sharing his cloak with a beggar—a symbol of generosity and compassion .  

Dominating the square is the historic town hall, constructed in 1739 after the original building was destroyed in 1689. Its Baroque façade and mansard roof add to the square’s picturesque ambiance .

The historic town of Cochem, German is a gorgeous, old, winery town on the Mosel river. It has a castle as well, on the hill, called Reichsberg Cochem castle that is absolutely lovely. It is a town of only about 5,000 people, but it is well worth seeing.

Settled during Celtic and Roman times, it has been here from at least 866 AD. It has been an imperial estate, hit by the plague, had a monastery, was occupied by the French, besieged multiple times, given to Prussia, bombed in WW2 and was once used as housing for officers for a nearby concentration camp of 13,000 prisoners.

It is a wine district and has lovely vineyards up the valley slope. The markplatz square is gorgeous with its intricately decorated buildings. Am 30. August 2025 haben wir die wunderschöne Stadt Cochem besucht und dieser Tag bleibt uns in bester Erinnerung. Die Stadt liegt malerisch an der Mosel, eingebettet zwischen Fluss und Wald, mit vielen alten Gebäuden, engen Gassen und einem historischen Charme, der sofort ins Auge fällt.

An diesem Wochenende fand das große Weinfest statt. Schon beim Ankommen spürte man die besondere Atmosphäre: die Straßen waren voller Menschen, überall herrschte fröhliches Treiben, und zahlreiche Musikgruppen spielten traditionelle Blasmusik mit Trompeten und anderen klassischen Instrumenten. Diese Klänge begleiteten uns durch die ganze Stadt und verliehen dem Fest eine sehr lebendige und gleichzeitig traditionelle Stimmung. Natürlich gab es reichlich Wein zu probieren, und ein echtes Highlight war sogar ein Weinautomat, der sofort ins Auge fiel.

Neben dem Fest hat Cochem selbst unglaublich viel zu bieten. Man findet unzählige kleine Cafés, gemütliche Restaurants und viele Souvenirshops, in denen man schöne Andenken kaufen kann. Überall in der Stadt gibt es Möglichkeiten, etwas zu essen oder zu trinken, und die netten Ecken laden zum Verweilen ein. Der Blick über die Mosel und die grünen Hänge drumherum ist traumhaft.

Ein absolutes Highlight war für uns die Reichsburg Cochem. Der Aufstieg lohnt sich sehr, denn von dort oben hat man einen atemberaubenden Blick über die Stadt, den Fluss und die Umgebung. Direkt am Schloss befindet sich zudem ein sehr schönes Café, in dem man sich bei einer Kleinigkeit zum Essen oder einem Getränk ausruhen und die Aussicht genießen kann.

Insgesamt war unser Besuch in Cochem eine wunderbare Erfahrung. Die Kombination aus historischem Flair, Natur, köstlichem Wein, Musik und einer lebendigen Feststimmung macht diesen Ort absolut einzigartig.
