Beethovenpark is an approximately 40 hectare big natural landscape park located Southwest in Cologne in the district of Sülz.
Beethovenpark was planned in 1924 to give Cologne a greener and fresher look and finished 3 years later. It was built on an area of a former gravel pit, that was raised by debris from World War 2, which was also utilized to created the „Pilzberg“ hill on the east side of the park. While there are forrest like areas on the east and west side of the park, there is a big green meadow left out in the middle, which is great for sports, sunbathing or having a picnic in the warmer seasons. The slope of „Pilzberg“ was left without trees, so you have a great view over the park from there and it can be used for sledging in winter or to ride down your mountainbike in summer at least if you take care that you don’t collide with pedestrians on the foot of that slope.
Beethovenpark is in my opinion one of the nicest parks in Cologne, even though it is missing a lake. It’s a great place just to take your dog to, go for a walk or jogging or to chill with your friends (at least in non-covid times), when the weather is good.
Beethovenpark is not a great park for cycling I think, because a central flat paved cycling path is missing, which I could imagine to connect Klettenbergpark in the east with Äußerer Grüngürtel and Decksteiner Weiher in the periphery, which would make Sülz a lot more attractive to cyclists, who have to share the streets with cars or come in the way of pedestrians in the parks currently. This is probably not an option though as the park is a landscape protected area.
As I am writing this in 2021 covid times having a picnic is unfortunately prohibited right now. Also stargazing at night is not an option due to curfew after 21 o‘clock, which is a bit unfortunate, I think. But I will not take this into account for the rating.
All in all I’m very happy to have this park in my neighborhood and give it 5 stars I would still like to mention that there is potential for improvement, like renewing the paths in the periphery, adding of a bike path and maybe having a public freshwater well for drinking somewhere. Also it would be a nicer place, if people could keep the area clean and take their trash or use the trash bins, which should ideally be be emptied regularly or even better on an automated schedule, dependent on fill level.
PS: More flowers please.
