Museum Georg Schäfer — Attraction in Schweinfurt

We arrived after a 1 hour drive (each way) only to be told that most of the museum was closed for temporary work to be done. There had been no notice on the website. They suggested coming back on Sunday. We came back again on Sunday and were told that a few more rooms were open but others were still closed. We could see past a rope barrier that there was no work going on in any of them. The museum also charged us both times (at a discounted rate) as though we wanted to come twice! Still no info on the website. One gets the feeling that the people who run German museums and art galleries see visitors as a problem. The best solution is just to close as much of the museum as you can to visitors! Don’t tell them, of course, until they get there.

This is an outstanding art museum, beautifully designed. There is a permanent collection of German art which has many highlights; it has its origins in the collection of the industrialist whose name the museum bears. The attraction for us was a special exhibition of works of Egon Schiele. The arrangement of the works was excellent, the choice of works of other artists to provide context and the commentaries provided equally so. A great experience! Anlass des Besuchs des Museums Georg Schäfer in Schweinfurt war die Sonderausstellung "Tod und Teufel". Diese ist sehr gut aufgebaut und führt einen aus der Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart zum Umgang mit Tod und Horror in der Gesellschaft. Manche Exponate sind für sensible Menschen eher nicht geeignet. Man kann sich diesen Ausstellungsstücken aber recht gut entziehen, wenn es sein muss. Die Bandbreite von alten Gemälden und Figurinen bis hin zu modernen Kunstwerken, Mode, Film und Musik fand ich sehr gut präsentiert. Auch die Dauerausstellung mit den Werken aus der Sammlung Georg Schäfer ist sehr beeindruckend. Das Museum und die Stiftung kümmern sich sehr um die Provinienzforschung und so finden sich an einigen Bildern interessante Berichte dazu. Das Museumsgebäude an sich ist schon ein Kunstwerk (nicht weiter verwunderlich bei dem Architekten, denn Volker Staab zeichnet u. a. für das Neue Museum in Nürnberg verantwortlich) und ist gut gelegen, in unmittelbarer Nähe des Mains. Eine Tiefgarage befindet sich direkt unter dem Museum. Nicht zu vergessen sei der Museumsshop mit Café. Der selbstgebackene Kuchen schmeckt sehr gut!
