Wernigerode Hbf — Attraction in Wernigerode

Brilliant fun, and best thing for me personally was to be able to stand outside the carriages, and fully appreciate it all. Its also good to be able to chat with the other people who come outside ... I learned a lot in this way. If you're going upto The Brocken and back, buy a Hin und Ruckfahrt ticket, which allows you to travel on a y trains that day.... and your ticket(s) WILL be checked in both directions. We travelled from and back to Wernigerode ... same train all the way up, and a split journey coming back, changing at one of the stations en route ... check the timetable carefully to ensure that you get the engine of choice, as there are both steam and diesel. We caught the first steam train going up, which left at about 0850, and it was busy but not packed, by any means. More people board during the journey, and as there are several trips during the day, the queue to come DOWN again can be very large, and it's not possible to reserve a seat. Lastly, disabled access ... one our party uses a small (I can lift it) foldable electric mobility scooter, which we managed to manhandle aboard with little trouble. The steps onto the carriages are about a foot high, so some people may struggle with that, or if you don't have family or friends...

Tickets for the Steam Train can be purchased here or online and an unlimited number are sold, so there is no guarantee of a seat on the train. We purchased tickets for the 10:45 train to the Brocken but it was full. Fortunately we were able to get our tickets stamped for the next train.

It is very important to thoroughly research your trip. Unfortunately, we were unprepared and unable to hear the announcement that we needed to switch trains at Drei Annen to get to the Brocken. We ended up continuing on toward Eisfelder Tahlmühle.

My grasp of the German Language fell a bit short here but we were able to communicate with the train staff and learned that we could stay on the train until it returned to Drei Annen and then get on the train to the Brocken, but by that time it was rather late in the day and the weather had turned to the worst. All in all, we made it back to Wernigerode and chalked it all up as an adventure.

The HSB website is practically useless so your best bet for planning is to pick up the physical copy of train schedule and thoroughly plan your route. Also, be prepared to speak German or use a...

Der Bahnhof Wernigerode ist ein Kleinod in der sonst so oft auffindbaren Wüste in der Fläche der Regionalbahnhöfe.

HIer halten die Züge von Goslar nach Halberstadt, die in der einen Stunde nach Halle weiterfahren und in der anderen nach Magdeburg.

Zusätzlich fährt am Kleinbahnhof die Harzer Schmalspurbahn zum Brocken ab.

Das Gebäude ist komplett saniert und ist außen wie innen sehr gut restauriert.

Es gibt hier einen gut sortierten Zeitschriftenladen mit Post, der auch eine sehr gut sortierte Postkarten- und Souvenirabteilung hat.

Gegenüber hat sich vor Jahren der Bäcker Steineke einquartiert, der sich in den letzten Jahren immer mehr erweitert hat und mittlerweile einen großen Teil des Paterres einnimmt. Das Angebot dort ist riesig, sowohl für den Reisenden als auch für den täglichen Bedarf zu hause.

Im Gebäude befindet sich ein Reisezentrum, welches aber nicht mehr von der DB betrieben wird, da diese im Harz komplett nicht mehr fährt, sondern dieses Reisezentrum wird von "mein Takt" betrieben, das ist eine hiesige Institution Sachsen-Anhalts.

Der Zugverkehr wird in der Regel über das barrierefreie Gleis 1 abgewickelt, aber selbst wenn man mal auf Gleis 2 muss, ist dies über einen Aufzug erreichbar. Auch der Fußgängertunnel, der die beiden Seiten des Geländes verbindet, ist barrierefrei.

Das Bahnhofsgebäude selber ist von der Bahnsteigseite aus barrierefrei befahrbar, von der Vorplatzseite aus nicht. Das ist aber nicht schlimm, denn es gibr einen ebenerdigen Ausgang aus dem Bahnhof, der von Gleis 1 aus abgeht und an der Schmalspurbahn vorbei führt.

Die Harzer Schmalspurbahn hat einen extra Bahnhof an der Seite, wo auch ein Verkaufsraum für Fahrkarten und Souvenirs vorhanden ist.

Ist der Schalter noch geschlossen, kann man die Fahrkarten für die HSB auch im Zug kaufen, dort aber nur bar.

Direkt vor dem Bahnhof ist ein Taxistand und nur wenige Meter nebenan der Busbahnhof mit den Stadt- und Regionalbussen.

Alles im allem ein sehr sympathischer Bahnhof, in den ich immer wieder...
