I am happy to see that Ghana is expanding its airport. Hopefully in the near future it will be bigger with more space for travellers to sit and shop in the local currency and not USD.
The one thing that still hasn't changed is those people that force to help you and then scam you of any money you have for something nobody asked them to do. The incompetent staff members who are most likely working with these scammers who do not have a uniform and do not belong at the chaotic departure desk, must be stopped.
I was told my a staff member at the Ethiopian checkin desk, after she weighed all my bags and couldn't find fault, she then told me that my hand luggage was overweight, it was 8 kilos and according to her it should be 7 kilos (mind you the same airline told me upon departure from London to Accra for the hand luggage to be 8 kilos.) Ghana makes up the rules as they go. This left a bad taste, and I do not feel like I will go through hoops to fly with Ethiopian Airways (longer flights) just to support African development. After I was told me reduce the weight of my hand luggage and in the chaos at the annoyingly slow check-in counter and unnecessary weighing of bags next to the tight and slow check-in cue, this man came out of nowhere and started sorting my things. Which he end up charging me 70 GhC for it. I DID NOT ASK FOR HIS HELP.
This airport is the most chaotic and corrupt airport I've encountered during my travels. Train your incompetent and corrupt staff and make sure people who are not travelling or working there have any handling with passengers. Learn from other airports, even Kenya Airport does it better.
Also while in cue a staff member requested to see my passport. I am a Dutch national, and she started drilling me unnecessary till she saw my name, and said " Oh you're Ghanaian. I taught you were Nigerian, and was going to ask you more questions. I was shocked as this confirmed all the bad treatment I received in Ghana because my skin is not dark as theirs, and they consider me to be Nigerian or mixed race. This xenophobia towards Nigerians should be dealt with. The few bad rotten appeals does not make 200 millions people all bad. Check your biased attitude.
To become a leading tourist destination you need to treat people equally and fairly. Why are non trained staff members acting as if they are customs? It doesn't make sense whatsoever.
Once you escape check-in and enter security is when you realise how incompetent and slow those check-in counter members are. A majority don't even know how to use simple computers. Why are they in the role if they don't know how to use a computer? It's 2023. The world is digital. Train your staff. I am seriously traumatised by this...

Read moreKotoka International Airport (KIA), was originally a military airport used by the British Royal Air Force during World War II in 1946.
