Really good place to visit in Darjeeling. The monastery belongs to the Gelukpa or the Yellow Hat sect and is known for its 15 feet (4.6 m)-high statue of the Maitreya Buddha. The external structure of the building was established in 1850 by the Mongolian astrologer and monk Sokpo Sherab Gyatso, who was head of the monastery until 1905. In 1909, Kyabje Domo Geshe Rinpoche Ngawang Kalsang, popularly called Lama Domo Geshe Rinpoche, succeeded Sherab Gyatso as head. It was he who commissioned the statue of the Maitreya Buddha, and he remained head until 1952. During the Chinese occupation of 1959 in Tibet many high ranking abbots fled to India and took refuge in the monastery. In 1961, Dhardho Rinpoche became head of the Yiga Choeling monastery Ghoom, Darjeeling. He died in 1990 and three years later, a boy named Tenzin Legshad Wangdi was recognised as his reincarnation. On 25 April 1996 he was enthroned at Kalimpong Tibetan ITBCI school. The thirteenth in the line of Tulkus, Tenzin Legshad Wangdi, still goes by the name of Dhardo Tulku. He is studying Tibetan Philosophy at Drepung Loseling University in South India. Under the supervision of Dhardo Rinpoche, the Managing Committee was set up in order to improve the monastery. Beautiful Buddhists temple and One of very famous Buddha Temple...Ghoom monastery is located near Darjeeling and it is one of the oldest monasteries.. Ghoom station is also nearby... You can also take a toy train to reach there... Darjeeling is a must-visit place for any person. What else one wants when you can see monks playing badminton with such high spirits... This place is very calm, clean and peaceful. It will not take more than 20 mins for you to explore it but it's worth going there. One can think to meditate once they enter this temple. A huge Budha sculpture in the temple which beautiful to see. The monks in the temple are very clam and helpful to talk, explaining their culture and meaning of life. It's clean and also had washrooms for both men and women, a nice place for pictures because of the vibrant colors. Overall great experience and beautiful place to worship and to buy some beautiful souvenirs and take along with you. They have a little shop inside the temple where you can buy their traditional material like bells, small laughing Buddha sculptures, etc...... Overall a nice place to visit.. It's too cold here in the winter season.. historical railway... it's a heritage site... I hope, you should have a happy & safe journey 😊
