Greek castles often challenge my traditional concept of what a castle should be — and this one is no exception. After passing through the main gate, you'll be surprised to find that inside are numerous houses, still full of life, preserved from that time. That surprise quickly turns into a moment of realization — of course! Castles were built to protect residents from outside invasions and threats.
The streets within the castle walls are steeped in the atmosphere of time. If you sit down with a cup of rich hot chocolate at the small square — the “cultural” center of the place — you’ll feel as if you’ve become part of the flow of time yourself.
The narrow, winding streets inside the castle form a maze, but it’s not easy to get lost. There’s a church with a tall bell tower that still stands, and nearby are excavated ruins. Every time I hear my wife telling me that it is a place that her own mother forbade her visit it, when she was a school girl, due to bad reputation. Still, times change. If you are in Chios, you should visit it. Before doing so, search its history and which places to visit inside the castle. I am not good in describing what you should see and why (I hated history as a student) but, trust me, you should spend some time to check it out. There are not only historical places but also nice cafes, restaurants, churches, a Turkish bath and the walls that protected the habitats from invasion...
Read moreVisited first time yesterday, despite coming to Chios Island with my family for so many years. Started from the main gate and walked through the town ending up at the Turkish Baths which have recently been restored. Definitely worth the visit. Points of interest the old jail, the town square with the Turkish cemetery, the seaside wall and of course the Turkish baths. You can also have a nice lunch or dinner at Vradipus ( Sloth) where they have set tables and a bar at the ruins of an old traditional stone house with some really nice and tasty dishes at decent prices. We combined same with a coffee at the picturesque town square with in the castle. Would definitely...
