Spinalonga is one of the easier Greek islands to reach at just a 10 mins boat ride from Elounda and it's well worth it. The island has a fascinating history and up until the 1950's was used as a leper colony, but that's just a small part of the island's story. Despite the size there's a lot to see and plenty of spaces to explore. Beware some parts at the top are quite rocky and we did see some people struggling with inappropriate footwear! The entry price of just 8 EUR feels very reasonable but note prices at the one kiosk on the island are very steep so you might be best to pick up provisions from a supermarket in Elounda to take over...which is what we did. I went here about 38 years ago and remember walking down the streets, very eerie and looking in the concrete graves which had had their tops removed , you could see the human bones etc. There were was no cafe or shop to buy drinks then. We were staying in Elounda and I was looking to go into business here at the time renting cars, mopeds etc. The food and...

Fin avril début mai 2025, en vacances près d'Héraklion en Crète, mes filles et moi-même sommes parties visiter l'île de Spinalonga. Ce jour là, le temps était légèrement couvert et venteux. La traversée jusque l'île fut légèrement mouvementée, le bateau tanguait et nous fûmes légèrement rafraichies par les embruns. La vue sur l'île était splendide. La visite libre de celle-ci nous a permis d'imaginer la vie solitaire des âmes oubliées (référence au livre de Victoria Hislop (l'île des oubliés). Malgré tout, cette île est magnifique. Les plantes sauvages fleurissant un peu partout en touches jaunes, rouges, roses embellissaient l'endroit. Il faut compter facilement 1 heure à 2 heures pour tout explorer selon les capacités motrices et les arrêts pour admirer autour de soi. LUOGO DAVVERO MAGICO! Di certo non ci si viene per la spiaggia, ma per vedere ciò che rimane non solo della fortezza veneziana della seconda metà del XVI, ma anche del suo passato turco (dal 1715 sino alla fine del XIX secolo) per arrivare sino all'ultimo uso quando si decise di farne un lebbrosario. I lebbrosi erano visti come impuri ed esclusi il più possibile dalla società. Lo scopo di Spinalonga era quello di prevenire l'ulteriore diffusione della lebbra, non di alleviare le sofferenze dei malati. Di conseguenza, i residenti non venivano curati. La passeggiata fra le rovine è davvero emozionante così come poter arrivare nella parte più alta (ma ci vogliono scarpe adatte!). I paesaggi e le viste sono mozzafiato!! I soldi pagati per il trasferimento in barca e per l'accesso sono assolutamente ben spesi!!
