What an amazing amount of progress! As my photos will attest, I was here back in 1995 and, as you will note, the roof had not been added and there was a lot of scaffolding up around the building. I'm curious to now read up on who is doing this work and whether it is related to Mystras being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is impressive to see; at the time I was just an American tourist who pretty much circumnavigated all of the Peloponnese and much of mainland Greece with a friend and my sister and there was little going on. The economy was even worse off then, or at least no entities were doing any restoration.

I found the statue of Constantine Paleologos down in the town square fascinating, as he was born in Constantinople in 1405 and was the second son of the Byzantine emperor Manuel II of Paleologos. In 1443 he was named Despot of Mystras, which as an American would seem to have a negative connotation but he seems to be revered by the Greeks, or at least the Greeks of the Peloponnese. I was curious to find that this region was actually a major outpost of Byzantium, almost like a US state. Constantine Paleologos went on to be crowned emperor of Byzantium here in the cathedral of Agios Demetrios in 1449 and then left to briefly rule the empire in Constantinople, dying in 1453, defending it...

this place definitely worth. it is an old Byzantine town built on the side of the mountain. there are 3 different levels you can reach by walking from the first to the third or going by car from the second to the third level. the view is amazing especially in winter when the mountains around are covered by the snow. the buildings are under restructuring and actually they are rebuilting as they used to be. it is quite strange to see this kind of maintenance but all in all gives you an idea of how it was. there are a lot of billboards with explanations and story about...

I deducted one star due to the limited visitor access, despite no active renovations taking place. However, the progress on the renovations appears promising. I genuinely hope that economic conditions will permit a comprehensive restoration in the near future.
