Now Spartans were Spartans... oops I mean, they were not into ostentatious displays as Athens or Thebes when it came to their city. They were a warrior force & spent much time on their warfare practices & not construction skills. The much famed fighting force have left many modern tourists bereft of memorable pictures thus the clever modern Greeks have erected this monstrous statue of a spartan warrior in his prime. No connection to any ancient war hero’s, say Leonidas the boss of 300 but it serves its touristy instagram purposes. My pics are also taken with the sole purpose... “I was there in Sparta” pics.
Ancient Sparta and its way of life is gone and today it is a small town in the countryside with a good nightlife and not particularly famous with tourists. The King Leonidas statue reminds us of a glorious era and it stands in front of the football stadium. When the Persians attacked at Thermopylae and told the Spartans and their allies to lay down their weapons, Leonidas' response, immortalised beneath his feet, was 'Molon labe' ('Come and get them').
Sparta (sparti) is quite a fascinating place with a lot of history and amazing culture. Though there isn't to much to do during the winter time the statue of Leonidas is a really cool site to see and spectacular historical experience! It's a very detailed statue and has engraving below it with a brief expalination of who he is and when the statue was made. Overall a really cool place to visit and say you've experience first hand!
We stopped here for some minutes on our way to Monemvasia, the statue looks marvellous but we were surprised that the real Leonidas does not look like Gerard Butler, 😂😂. But surely in real life was more impressive than the one in the movie If you are passing by close to Sparti, do not forget to visit the Leonidas Statue, and if you have a little bit more time maybe you can visit the Ancient Sparti Acropolis.
The statue of Leonidas is very a impressive bronze statue and really really big. Also close to the ground so you can see it closer up then most conventional statues which are hicked up on pretty tall pillars. It was a quick 5 minute stop for us as the sun was really beating down that day and it can get very very hot. The statue is not too far from the entrance to the ancient Sparti town.
As other have said, despite this being the birth place of the Spartan army, there is nothing really to see. The ruins are very small and only a few bricks. The statue is cool but outside the sports stadium. Sadly this was full of kids smoking crack and shouting and screaming (during the day). We stopped quickly to take a photo for fear of being mugged or worse, killed.
