A hidden gem in Guatemala city. We went to this museum based on a recommendation from our travel book. But it exceed our (already high) expectations. Located a little out of the main city area Museo Ixchel has a mind blowing collection of huipils on top of a very strong historical narrative of Guatemala’s textile history. Not only will you learn a lot about weaving and traditional clothing, the information given (in Spanish & English) will equally allow you to learn about Guatemala, its culture and history. From the first settlers to the modern textile revolution. This museum is as good for people who know nothing of textiles as well as for the passionate/experts. Or for those, like us, who were looking to better understand Guatemala’s past and present.
Moreover, you will get to enjoy Carmen Pettersen art depiction of traditional costumes... which left us speechless.
As a plus the staff is very knowledgeable, showing great kindness and are dedicated to their work!
A must see... We definitely plan on coming...
Read moreExhaustive collection of textiles depicting diversity, history, and evolution from very early on (early Mayan) till modern times. The collection is truly impressive and it takes at least 2-3 hours even if you're skipping a few articles in-between. English translation is provided along with the Spanish description so that's a great help for international visitors.
The entrance fee is reasonable and the museum store downstairs has a good collection of hupile and other artifacts for purchase at relatively reasonable prices. Even with the slightly higher prices, you know that the museum is supporting the local artisan community.
The museum itself is located inside the university campus which is very green and clean. The staff is helpful too. I'd definitely recommend a visit here if you're visiting...
