This place has a history and has been there from the times of the Ahom Kingdom. It is on the Old Circuit House Road. Another way to reach this is through the lane leading to the Jorhat Tennis Club, which has a history of it's own as well. The Tennis Club is more than 💯 years old. I have added photos of both the access points, one from this Tennis Club lane and the other from the Old Circuit House Road. In fact, the Tennis Club lane is very beautiful with palm trees lining both sides, as you will see in the photographs. This is a pretty decent sized pond. It also acts as a water source for folks nearby-I noticed a few taking water in a mini-tanker-rickshaw(There is a photograph of that as well)
It is a peaceful spot for relaxation. You can see lots of folks taking their Morning or Evening Walks here. There is a walking track all around the Rajmao Pukhuri(Pukhuri means Pond). There are multiple covered areas on platforms where people can be seen doing exercises, yoga, etc. There is also an open air gym with some equipment and there are people regularly using that as well.
In its initial days, it must have looked very beautiful. Right now, it is in need of repair. One end of the walking track has caved into the water. This need to be repaired fast. The track is clean otherwise. The surrounding wall and grill needs a fresh coat of paint.
The good thing is that this area has lots of trees and plants. It is a nice place to go and talk a walk or just sit on one of the designated...
Read moreRajmao Pukhuri is located at Old Circuit House Road, just near the Planetarium.. It is a historical pond built during the Ahom Era.. Later on it got some beautification.. On an average the pond will be 1km long in it's radius.. It is a very nice place to spend time over here, people use to take morning nd evening walk in this place with all the fresh air and natural environment.. On my visit, I found many people busy with different things, at 1st I saw some boys doing work-out , than I saw a group of lady laughing and giggling - might be they are waiting for their childrens school to get over, than I got two other boys busy with their yoga activities.. In a sense, the people of Jorhat does like the place nd enjoy it by any mean they can.. I saw four steps , on all the four side of the pond.. The gathering always remains full as per the local people, no matter it's day time of the evening time.. Good place to...
Read moreRajmao Pukhuri is a manmade lake or historical tank of Jorhat, dug by Numali Rajmao, mother of last king Chandrakanta Singha of Ahom Dynasty In 1818 and led it to Lord Vishnu. This is why this pond was also called Vishnu Sagar. Since the pond was dug by Rajmao, it is also known as Rajmao Pukhuri. Rajmao Pukhuri has a great historical background during the Ahom Kingdom, which can be called the Hearth of Jorhat town. On my last visit, I saw some people used to take morning walks there, some were doing yoga etc. No doubt, the place has eternal peace and beauty but I think the management is too poor. The bank of the pond is not cleaned, some posts are broken. The management, municipal board of Jorhat and the local people should focus on this point. Because, Rajmao Pukhuri of Jorhat, is a fantastic spot to learn about local history and work off some calories between our...
