Dandi bridge, where the historic salt march began, has been a crumbling edifice ever since our freedom. Today, after almost eight decades of the Mahatma having left the Ashram, there is a renewed effort to revive the bridge. The bridge will now be an access to the river front.
The silent-zone project at the Ashram has mostly relied on creating public spaces that are quiet, peaceful and are accessible by all. Creation of an Ashram plaza with dense trees and cobbled paths, canopies with seating arrangements and a possible cafeteria is also being incorporated in the plans. "A special promenade will link Dandi bridge to the river front. Keeping in mind the aim of the Ashram, every piece of architecture will symbolise peace, tranquillity and encourage introspection," CEPT university professor Utpal Sharma.
