OVERVIEW This is the north western gate in the inner battlement wall of Amber. On the road to the Sagar, it was part of the inner defences of Amber Palace. It is a heritage site visited by some tourists as it is close the the famous temples and stepwell of ancient Amber and the Anokhi Museum.
DESCRIPTION This is a simple but massive plastered stonebuilt structure with steps leading up to the walkway of the inner battlement wall of Amber. Inside the gate is the ancient town and outside the gate (up a steep road) is an important part of the water system of Amber (the Sagar, or lake). In the hills to the north of the gate is the middle battlement wall of Amber.
VISITING The gate is very close to the loop road that goes around the old town of Amber. One can easilyexplore the surroundings of the gate with temples, chhatris and hillside walks. The upper level of the gate leads onto the wall which provides a steep walk up to the watchtower overlooking the Sagar, and onwards to the foot of Jaigarh Fort (no entrance). There are spectacular views of the Sagar, old Amber, the walls and surrounding countryside.
CONSERVATION At present, the gatehouse complex is in reasonable condition, and there has been some conservation in the last 20 years with replastering and painting. The gate would benefit from some simple repair...
