From nearly 2000 step-wells in India, Rajasthan houses almost 100 of them. It is famous for its well-preserved stepwells, and one of them is the Panna Meena Ka Kund. The other names for Panna Meena ka Kund are Panna Mian Kund, Panna Meena Baori, and Panna Meena Bawri.

A baori is an Indian name for stepwell. It is an old water storage tank that may be accessible through a flight of stairs.

The Panna Meena Ka Kund is a unique architectural marvel in India, visited annually by thousands. In addition, the 200-meter deep stepwell attracts attention from tourists globally.

One of the incredible facts is that it is full of water all year round. It was a water supply for local people in the past.

Amer town is the home to Panna Meena ka Kund. The Amer Fort is what draws visitors to Amer. Most travelers visit Amer Fort, oblivious that there are many more attractions to see in this old town like this stepwell.

Panna Meena Kund is Jaipur's sole fully restored and operational stepwell. It dates back to a time when there wasn't any piped water. For ages, it has helped villages around it to access drinking water. The Baori, sometimes known as the Bawri, was an integral element of the community and society surrounding it. It was a reliable source of drinking water, especially during periods of low rainfall. It is an eight-story stepwell that allows access to water at any level via a flight of steps. Panna Meena Kund is beautiful on its own.

Panna Meena ka Kund has a unique architectural style. However, the most fantastic part about this location is that the steps used to descend cannot take you back up. The rationale of these methods would be difficult to understand if you are new to the area. On the other hand, local people have adapted to this place and know how to use these steps. You must check this out!

The stairs are in a crisscross pattern, wowing everyone, and it is the main reason so many people visit this lovely site every year.

One of the distinguishing features is its unobtrusive presence. The steps are only on three sides, so there is plenty of space to relax, converse, or enjoy the surreal view around. A few design elements, such as places between the stair floors, baffle the visitors with the reason behind this construction. There are four octagonal pavilions, known as Chhatris, on each of the four corners.

#Trivia: Panna Meena ka Kund is an excellent example of water management and rainwater harvesting techniques. It has recently acquired popularity as a result of the filming of various Bollywood films here.

The most pleasing thing about this Panna Meena ka Kund is that the terrace of this step provides a beautiful view of the renowned Amer fort. But, unfortunately, the Baori is no longer in use. On the other hand, local lads use it as a playground, and for organizing diving and swimming competitions.

Even though it is not on a typical tourist itinerary, some guides and tour operators provide tours of...

Panna Meena ka Kund is an 8th-century stepwell located in Amer, near Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. This stunning architectural structure was built during the reign of the Meenas and Rajputs, and it’s known for its symmetrical design and beautiful step patterns. Here’s an overview of its key features and significance:

Architectural Style

The kund (or stepwell) is an extraordinary example of Indian stepwell architecture, with a series of crisscrossing steps that form a unique, symmetrical geometric pattern.

It is a square-shaped structure with steps on three sides and a corridor on the fourth, making it both aesthetically pleasing and functional. The design allows for easy access to water regardless of the water level, as people can descend the steps in a zigzag manner.

Historical Significance

Stepwells like Panna Meena ka Kund were crucial in arid regions of Rajasthan, where they served as water reservoirs and community gathering spots.

These wells were not only practical but also served a social and religious function, as they provided a cool, shaded area for people to gather, rest, and pray.

Cultural Importance

The stepwell is still an architectural marvel, drawing visitors who are fascinated by its design and history. Its unique aesthetic makes it a popular spot for photography, offering a glimpse into the ancient water management systems and community spaces of the time.

Many legends are associated with the stepwell, such as stories of spirits guarding it and local customs that add to the mystical aura around the place.

Tourism and Photography

Panna Meena ka Kund has become an Instagram-famous location due to its mesmerizing symmetry, especially during sunrise and sunset when the light enhances its geometry.

Though visitors are generally not allowed to go down the steps anymore, the view from above is captivating and gives a good perspective of its intricate layout.

Current Condition and Preservation

The kund is well-preserved, and authorities are cautious about maintaining its structure due to its historical significance. While it’s accessible for tourism, measures are in place to ensure that it remains protected.

Hello friends,

Nestled in the heart of Jaipur, Panna Meena ka Kund is an ancient stepwell that exudes timeless beauty and intricate design. Built in the 16th century, this architectural marvel serves as a testament to the ingenuity of its creators, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich history and culture of Rajasthan.

I visited Panna Meena ka Kund twice in the past six months with my family, and each visit was a unique experience. The first thing you'll notice is the parking situation – there's no dedicated parking area, which can be a bit of a hassle. On one occasion, we managed to find a spot right outside on the road, but on our second visit, we had to park a little further away and walk to the stepwell. Navigating the roads leading to the kund can be tricky, as they are narrow and winding, so it's best to have a small vehicle or a driver who can drop you off and handle the parking.

As we approached the stepwell, the sight of Panna Meena ka Kund left us in awe. The symmetry and design are truly breathtaking, giving off a distinct Bollywood vibe. The best times to visit are either in the morning or an hour before sunset, as the lighting is perfect for capturing stunning pictures. I highly recommend bringing your camera or smartphone to take advantage of the picturesque setting.

During our visits, we noticed that the water level varied significantly. In February 2025, the water level was much lower than our first visit in September 2024. This difference added a unique perspective to each visit, making the experience even more memorable.

While exploring the stepwell, it's essential to take extra precautions, especially if you have children with you. The steps are steep, and the depth of the stepwell can be dangerous. Adults should also be mindful of their surroundings while taking pictures to avoid any accidents.

In conclusion, Panna Meena ka Kund is a must-visit destination in Jaipur. Despite the minor challenges with parking and navigation, the mesmerizing design and historical significance make it a worthwhile addition to your itinerary. Don't forget to stay safe and enjoy the enchanting beauty of...
