Gulmarg Gondola: Ascending to Alpine Majesty

Nestled amidst the snow-capped peaks of the Pir Panjal range in the heart of Jammu and Kashmir, India, the Gulmarg Gondola stands as a gateway to alpine adventure and breathtaking vistas. This iconic cable car, one of the highest in the world, beckons travelers to ascend into the lap of nature's grandeur. Join us on a virtual journey as we explore the charm and allure of the Gulmarg Gondola.

Gulmarg: The Winter Wonderland: The journey begins in the enchanting town of Gulmarg, known for its pristine landscapes and winter sports. Nestled at an altitude of 2,650 meters (8,694 feet), Gulmarg serves as the perfect base for those seeking the thrill of adventure and the tranquility of nature.

Ascending to Apharwat Peak: The Gulmarg Gondola is a two-stage cable car that whisks travelers from the foothills of Gulmarg to the breathtaking heights of Apharwat Peak. The first stage takes you to Kongdori Station at an elevation of 2,730 meters (8,957 feet), offering panoramic views of the surrounding meadows and snow-clad peaks. The second stage ascends to Apharwat Peak at an astounding altitude of 3,979 meters (13,051 feet), revealing a world of alpine majesty.

Panoramic Views and Snowy Splendor: The vistas from the Gondola are nothing short of spectacular. As the cable car ascends, travelers are treated to a 360-degree view of the Pir Panjal range and the Himalayan landscape beyond. During the winter months, the landscape transforms into a snowy wonderland, offering an immersive experience in the midst of powdery snow and crystalline ice.

Apharwat Peak: Beyond the Clouds: Reaching Apharwat Peak opens a realm of possibilities for adventure enthusiasts. The peak is a hub for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, attracting thrill-seekers from around the globe. The vast snowfields and well-groomed slopes make it an ideal playground for both beginners and seasoned winter sports enthusiasts.

Summer Charms of Apharwat: While Gulmarg is celebrated as a winter destination, the summer months bring a different kind of charm to Apharwat Peak. The meadows come alive with colorful wildflowers, and the alpine landscape invites hikers to explore trails leading to pristine lakes and panoramic viewpoints. The Gondola, now surrounded by lush greenery, provides a bird's-eye view of this summer paradise.

Photographer's Delight: For photography enthusiasts, the Gulmarg Gondola is a treasure trove of captivating scenes. From the misty meadows to the snow-covered peaks, every moment offers an opportunity to capture the essence of Gulmarg's natural beauty. The changing hues of the landscape throughout the day provide a dynamic canvas for photographers.

Logistics and Tips: The Gulmarg Gondola operates year-round, but the best time to visit depends on individual preferences. Winter is ideal for snow sports enthusiasts, while summer offers a more relaxed and scenic experience. It's advisable to check weather conditions before planning the ascent, as visibility can vary, especially during winter.

Local Cuisine and Hospitality: Gulmarg, with its warm hospitality, offers a range of accommodation options, from cozy guesthouses to luxury resorts. Local eateries serve traditional Kashmiri cuisine, allowing travelers to savor the flavors of the region. A cup of kahwa, the traditional Kashmiri green tea, is a delightful way to warm up after a day of adventure.

In conclusion, the Gulmarg Gondola is not just a means of transport; it's a journey into the heart of the Himalayas, where every cable car ride is an ascent into nature's grand amphitheater. Whether you seek the thrill of winter sports or the serenity of summer meadows, the Gulmarg Gondola promises an unforgettable experience, suspended between earth and sky, amidst the timeless...

Went here on 29/04/23.

Gulmarg is really a great place to visit. However due to the increased amount of tourism happening right now it’s very crowded.

En route to Gulmarg, they take a halt at Tanmarg to hire gum shoes and jackets. Gum shoes would be advisable to walk on the snowy paths. Jackets may / may not be required based on the climate. 150 per shoes/jacket for hire.

Then the ascent upslope to Gulmarg parking area. From there one has to go to the Gondola base camp which is about 1-1.5 km away. Jeeps charge 500 per trip (can share) or autos available for 100-150 per trip.

Gondola tickets are available online only for both phases of the trip. (Our tour manager managed to get tickets to both phases). Earlier you get to the gondola point the better. After 9:30 am a full blown crowd accumulates. We got there at 8:15 am, and boarded at 8:30 am (and we were the second group only in queue).

The gondola (cable car, covered) ride is insanely Beautiful, six people per gondola. All the beauty of the majestic mountains lie around you.

Phase 1 is quite beautiful, snow clad mountains all over with fresh powdery snow which we got fortunately. Large expanse of open fields.

There are activities which can be done. Costs depends purely on the providers. Rates range from rs 700-800 for sledge rides, rs 1000-1500 for skiing (unlimited time), rs 1000-2000 for snow bike (short or long trips). Sledge rides are good for children. And snow biking is also a good activity. Rates are completely variable and lot of scope for bargaining. But finalise the price BEFOREHAND. They also offer only photos with sledge, ski etc for 200-300. Entirely up to a person to negotiate. Kahwa/coffee/tea hawkers are all around. Would recommend the KESAR KAHWA highly. There is a restaurant there also which provides decent food and snacks. And their ambience is warm with a heater, so people who are chilled to the bone can relax a bit.

The weather there changed quite a bit, was chilly when we came, but by afternoon the sun came up and I had to ditch my jacket and sweater.

Phase 2 is at a higher altitude. There is another gondola which takes you there. One can spend approx 15-30 mins there at that altitude. Persons with lot of medical issues take care. But it’s totally worth it for the view and the experience. Large sheets of snow all around , really a sight to behold.

Careful walking on crushed snow and on slopes, lest you fall.

There are a lot of hotels from the base camp to the parking lot which one can visit.

When coming back to the parking area from the base camp, advisable to hire a transport as it becomes very tiring after the whole trip.

Tip- book gondola tickets well in advance for both phases. Get to the base camp early to avoid a queue. Wear good shoes. Bargain and fix prices of activities. Visit phase 2 definitely. Enjoy...

It is a must-visit place in Kashmir. We are from South India's Kerala, and we always wanted to spend time in a snow area, so we chose Kashmir. On our 3rd day after Sonamarg, we went to Gulmarg. In other words, Sonamarg was our first snow destination. The road to Gulmarg is good, especially during the winter months. But I should tell you that Gulmarg is better than Sonamarg, and here you may get more activities. If you are going to Sonamarg first, you better not do much activity there. because Gulmarg is more beautiful and has the most land. You can go skiing, gondola rides, cable cars, snow bike rides, etc. I should inform you not to be confused about choosing a cable car to go to Phase 2. We were on a budget-friendly trip, so we were confused too about whether to choose phase 2 or only phase 1. But finally, we opted for phase 2 and that was the best of our day in Gulmarg. Phase 1 is the more commercialised side, where you will find the activities, food outlets and washrooms. Phase 2 will take you to the Apharwat Peak. The breathtaking view from here is not able to be described in words. Asia's highest cable car, above pine trees and snow-capped mountains, is really a different experience. But I do not suggest phase 2 for people who are suffering from breathing problems, asthma, or any physical issues as it's over 4200m from sea level. Cable cars may be cancelled if there's heavy snowfall in Apharwat and bad weather. So check with them before booking the tickets to see whether they operate at that time. You should wear boots, hand gloves, and a winter jacket as we cannot predict the weather change here and it's cold. If you do not have those, you may get them on a rental basis. Also, use a cooling glass as it is very important during the day time. Also, you may feel eye pain and bulging eyes due to sunlight. But you need to bargain there. You can bargain for all activities except the cable car, as it's a fixed price. Cable cars can be booked either online or directly there. Online booking may help you to avoid long queues. If there's any chance, book the tickets online as it will be very crowded here sometimes. If you do not have a transportation facility, opt for a shared taxi, which is available even from Srinagar. Gulmarg is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We may feel uneasy when people press us to participate in activities and then follow us around saying the same thing. I felt angry at one point, but later I thought they were doing this for their lives. So let them do it and we can choose our own. Overall, Gulmarg Gondola was a nice experience, and I will surely come back soon.
