Gulmarg is really a great place to visit. However due to the increased amount of tourism happening right now it’s very crowded.
En route to Gulmarg, they take a halt at Tanmarg to hire gum shoes and jackets. Gum shoes would be advisable to walk on the snowy paths. Jackets may / may not be required based on the climate. 150 per shoes/jacket for hire.
Then the ascent upslope to Gulmarg parking area. From there one has to go to the Gondola base camp which is about 1-1.5 km away. Jeeps charge 500 per trip (can share) or autos available for 100-150 per trip.
Gondola tickets are available online only for both phases of the trip. (Our tour manager managed to get tickets to both phases). Earlier you get to the gondola point the better. After 9:30 am a full blown crowd accumulates. We got there at 8:15 am, and boarded at 8:30 am (and we were the second group only in queue).
The gondola (cable car, covered) ride is insanely Beautiful, six people per gondola. All the beauty of the majestic mountains lie around you.
Phase 1 is quite beautiful, snow clad mountains all over with fresh powdery snow which we got fortunately. Large expanse of open fields.
There are activities which can be done. Costs depends purely on the providers. Rates range from rs 700-800 for sledge rides, rs 1000-1500 for skiing (unlimited time), rs 1000-2000 for snow bike (short or long trips). Sledge rides are good for children. And snow biking is also a good activity. Rates are completely variable and lot of scope for bargaining. But finalise the price BEFOREHAND. They also offer only photos with sledge, ski etc for 200-300. Entirely up to a person to negotiate. Kahwa/coffee/tea hawkers are all around. Would recommend the KESAR KAHWA highly. There is a restaurant there also which provides decent food and snacks. And their ambience is warm with a heater, so people who are chilled to the bone can relax a bit.
The weather there changed quite a bit, was chilly when we came, but by afternoon the sun came up and I had to ditch my jacket and sweater.
Phase 2 is at a higher altitude. There is another gondola which takes you there. One can spend approx 15-30 mins there at that altitude. Persons with lot of medical issues take care. But it’s totally worth it for the view and the experience. Large sheets of snow all around , really a sight to behold.
Careful walking on crushed snow and on slopes, lest you fall.
There are a lot of hotels from the base camp to the parking lot which one can visit.
When coming back to the parking area from the base camp, advisable to hire a transport as it becomes very tiring after the whole trip.
Tip- book gondola tickets well in advance for both phases. Get to the base camp early to avoid a queue. Wear good shoes. Bargain and fix prices of activities. Visit phase 2 definitely. Enjoy...
