Dates of Stay - 22nd to 25th May 2022 Number of rooms - 4 Number of guests - 8 adults and 4 children
Location and Property: The hotel is located in the heart of Gulmarg, about 300mts from the Gondola gate and less than a km away from the Gulmarg entry gate.
It is overlooking the lush green meadows and the rooms facing the road and higher up have great views of the mountains and the meadows.
The outdoor seating area has a few different levels with a few chairs, a table and an umbrella where you can sit with your cuppa and enjoy the weather.
The hotel also has elevators that are useful especially when you are on higher floors.
Tip: request for rooms on higher floors and facing the road
Check-in: The reception team was very cooperative and welcoming and the process went on smoothly. The staff also was very helpful with the placement of luggage in respective rooms.
Restuarant: We had requested to he served Jain food throughout our stay (our meal plan included breakfast and dinner). After the initially goofup during dinner on the 1st night (the dishes were made a little too sweet), the team took excellent care of us and tried their best to serve us different Jain preparations for different meals.
The table service was excellent and the staff was always courteous and welcoming.
PS: they make excellent coffees.
Rooms: We were given rooms on the 2nd floor. 2 of the rooms had extra beds placed in them and they still had decent amount of space left to move around. The other 2 rooms were also decently sized, but not huge. The rooms had basic amenities that you'd expect of a hotel belonging to this category. The interiors are nicely done too. The central heating worked like a charm. Running hot water was sketchy at times, but worked well most of the times.
Activity room: There's a small cozy activity room on the ground floor where you can sit and relax with your friends and family, or mingle with other guests staying at the hotel. They have placed some really unique and arty stuff in this room, that goes with the overall feel of the hotel.
Special thanks to the F&B team, especially Mr. Shabir Ali, Mehboob, Quran, Shahid and Muzaber and the Chef Mr. M. Rafiq for making our meals and the...
Read moreWe traveled to Gulmarg when there was just a thin covering of snow and lot of muck around. Sadly, not the best of times. It exposes the amount of garbage littered around everywhere. The Kolahai is situated in a corner of Gulmarg. Close to the exit. It’s right next to a filthy drainage canal type thing, so the sight isn’t pretty when you walk out. The hotel is small and quaint. The wooden texture gives it a very warm feeling. Though the less said the better about the heating. The central heating is turned on and off on a random schedule, so you’re either going to freeze or get toasted. We stayed in the Club Room and Superior Club Room, both were adequate. The Superior has better views and a better layout. One thing that irked us about the rooms was the level of cleanliness. It wasn’t good. The housekeeping staff wouldn’t replenish basic things like coffee, tea, etc., during the turnover, but were prompt in getting us anything we needed if we called. The restaurant staff were excellent. Really polite, attentive and helpful. The food was good and I was glad to see non-vegetarian options beyond chicken. A special mention of Gala Dinner on the 31st night. They had live music and the food was really good. One downside I should mention is the hotel is largely wood and the walls between rooms are wafer thin. We could often hear the rooms next to us through the night. Suffice to say it was uncomfortable. Gulmarg doesn’t have too many hotels and I’m glad for that. It’s an ecological disaster waiting to happen, the unchecked tourist related activities. The Kolahai isn’t a special hotel but all things considered it isn’t all bad news either. It has enough redeeming qualities to...
