The Sacred Heart Cathedral in Shivamogga, Karnataka, is a significant landmark with a rich history and spiritual heritage. The origins of the Catholic community in Shivamogga date back to the early 19th century, with the first chapel built before 1830 by Konkani-speaking migrants. The cornerstone of the parish was laid by these early settlers, with assistance from a local tribunal chief who was later buried in the chapel he helped construct.
The arrival of twenty families of sepoys in 1830, who were part of a regiment returning from quelling a revolt, marked a significant increase in the Catholic population. The first priest to visit them was Rev. Fr Arulnader, and in 1838, the ecclesiastical district of Nagar or Shivamogga was incorporated into the Mission of Mysore, which was then under the administration of the Foreign Mission Society of Paris.
A new chapel was constructed in 1840 by Fr Bigot Beauclair and completed by Msgr Charbonneaux, with the first parish priest being Fr Garnier, appointed in 1846. The chapel, dedicated to the Holy Name of Mary, was situated along the Tunga River and included a cemetery.
By the end of the 17th century, the Paris Foreign Mission Society took over the administration of the Mysore Mission, and the districts of Shivamogga, Chitradurga, and Chikkamagalur came under the care of the Fathers of the Foreign Mission Society. A new church began construction in 1871 and was completed in 1875, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
As the Catholic community grew, the church was expanded in 1976. With the establishment of the Diocese of Shimoga, the church gained cathedral status on November 14, 1988. An entirely new cathedral was started in 1994 and completed in 1998, dedicated by Most Rev. Ignatius Pinto, the first Bishop of Shimoga.

Hope this is retained instead of making the church and its surroundings abound with concrete structures. Hope simplicity and environment sensitivity is integrated as we progress and trees are also given prominence. The resources can be used to improve the Accoustics of the church as the audio is really bad and echoes a lot during mass making it is difficult to hear clearly what’s spoken.
Whenever I visit Shimoga, I make it a point to visit the church and also attend mass if possible.
Located on a main road, the church cannot be missed and also because of its height it is visible from many areas of Shimoga. Ample parking is available for all vehicles, rest rooms are available and wheel chair access is also available.
Cobble stones leading upto the gate have been put up, way of the cross are being built, seven on each side of the church which are similar to the ones in Vailankanni as you walk towards old Vailankanni. A new grotto has been erected to honour Mother Mary and another structure to honour St.Antony is also erected. Hope nothing unnecessary keeps coming up.
