Swami Vivekananda in Belagavi

During his parivrajaka days (as an itinerant monk) prior to his visit to America, Swami Vivekananda visited the city of Belagavi (previously Belgaum), in North Karnataka, where he stayed from 16 to 27 October 1892.

Swamiji’s 12-day stay in Belagavi revolved around two buildings where he stayed. His first 3 days at Belagavi (Oct 16-18) were spent as a guest of a lawyer of the city, Shri Sadashiv Balakrishna Bhate. Reminiscences of the visit of Swamiji to Bhate’s house have been noted down by Prof. G. S. Bhate, the son of Shri Sadashiv B. Bhate, who at the time of Swamiji’s visit was a young boy. These can be read in the book, Reminiscences of Swami Vivekananda published by the Ramakrishna Mission.

The ownership of the house changed hands in course of time. In 1987 one third of the house including the room where Swami Vivekananda had stayed was gifted by its owner, Shri Balwant D. Belvi, a retired judicial magistrate, to an independent group of devotees of the Ramakrishna Movement based in Karwar in Karnataka. In 2006, this was finally transferred to the Ramakrishna Mission, which started a sub-centre there. The room where Swami Vivekananda stayed was maintained as a shrine, with a cot, a large mirror and a walking stick used by Swamiji...

A place where one of the great monks whom India has given birth to, none other than Swami Vivekananda stayed for 3 days in October 1892.

The memorial speaks about swamiji's stay in Belagavi, teachings of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda and the various activities carried out by The Ramakrishna Mission.

One visit to this memorial has the potential to change one's life significantly in positive direction. The paintings here are a treat to the eyes and the brain. Every painting has in-depth meaning.

It'll take about 60 mins to complete the memorial tour but every minute spent there understanding those pictures widens your horizon.

This premises hosts a bookstall. It also has other facilities like drinking water, parking and washroom. Needless to say it is one of the cleanest places in the city...

Must visit this place to get information about the great leader of our country Swami Vivekananda 🙏. You will be stuck with many hours after watching beautiful Live paintings of Swamiji and his Guru shree Ramkrishna Paramhans. You must visit this place if you visit belgav, they're giving you a brief information about Swamiji if you have time. They have a small library if you want to purchase some books at very reasonable prices. They have a collection of all kinds of books like yoga, children and morality, aadhyatm, science etc. I love their breathtaking detail paintings. Even you will find original things which Swamiji had touched when he had visited this bhate niwas like bed, some books, well etc. Even you will find this monument maintained so well. You will...
