Beautiful view...Boating experience was good... They had good buffet options... It was raining the day we visited most of the time... Nice experience... Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary (also known as Vembanad Bird Sanctuary) is situated at Kumarakom in Kottayam taluk of Kottayam district in the Indian state of Kerala, on the banks of Vembanad Lake. Set in the Kerala Backwaters, the bird sanctuary is a favourite haunt of migratory birds. Developed in a rubber plantation as a bird sanctuary by Englishman George Alfred Baker, the sanctuary was formerly known as Baker's Estate. The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation currently manages the sanctuary. The sanctuary is spread over 14 acres (5.7 ha) on the southern bank of the Meenachil River River. There is a system of paths for moving around within the sanctuary. Beyond the sanctuary, one can take a boat ride in Vembanad Lake or along the Meenachil River. Kumarakom is 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) from Kottayam. State Highway No. 1 leads to Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram in opposite directions. Kochi International Airport at Nedumbassery is 106 km (66 mi) from Kumarakom. Neighbouring areas such as Kaipuzha Muttu, Pathirmanal, Narakathara, Thollairam Kayal, and Poothanpandi Kayal are also good locations for spotting birds. The main attractions are local birds like waterfowl, koel, owl, egret, heron, cormorant, moorhen, darter, and brahminy kite, as well as the migratory gull, teal, tern, flycatcher, and other birds are seen here during their respective migratory seasons. Some of the migratory birds come from the Himalayas, and a few from Siberia. Sprawling across 14 hectares, and sitting by the banks of the river Vembanad, Kumarakom bird sanctuary is a vibrant hub of rare and numerous avian species. A multitude of migratory birds, from places as varied as the Himalayas to Siberia, flock to this wet land area. November to February is the ideal season to watch migratory birds. The other best option to visit the sanctuary is between June and August, which is also the breeding season of resident wetland birds such as Indian Darter, Little Cormorant, different species of egrets and herons, White Ibis and several species of kingfishers. Kumarakom bird sanctuary is located in Kottayam taluk in the district of Kottayam.

Kumarakom is a picturesque village in the Kottayam district of Kerala, India. It is situated on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the state. Kumarakom is famous for its backwater tourism, which offers visitors a serene and scenic experience of the Kerala countryside. Kumarakom is also home to a bird sanctuary, which is spread over 14 acres of land and attracts a variety of migratory and resident birds. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary was established in 1956 by the government of Travancore, and later developed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. The sanctuary is a haven for bird lovers, as it hosts hundreds of species of birds, including the rare Siberian crane, the darter, the heron, the egret, the waterfowl, the cuckoo, the owl, the teal, and the flycatcher. The best time to visit the sanctuary is during the winter months, from November to March, when the migratory birds flock to the area. The sanctuary also offers boat rides, nature walks, and cottages for accommodation. My Google Map Review: Recently visited Kumarakom Backwater Lakes and its Bird Sanctuary last month and I was amazed by the beauty and tranquility of the place. The backwater cruise was a relaxing and enjoyable experience, as I got to see the lush greenery, the coconut groves, the paddy fields, and the local life along the lake. The bird sanctuary was a treat for the eyes and ears, as I saw and heard many different kinds of birds, some of which I had never seen before. The staff at the sanctuary were friendly and helpful, and the cottages were clean and comfortable. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who loves nature and wildlife. It was a memorable and refreshing trip for me.

It’s a calm and quite place, would be an interesting visit if you would like to enjoy nature, be silent. We may not see birds during the day time but we sure hear them, sometimes often larges branches and leaves wiggle indicating a presence. The paths are well paved, some even with bricks and stones. There are many interesting seatings that happens to be branches and roots of different types of trees, which I really like. One side of the sanctuary is embedded with small streams that links to the lake finally. But the house boat engines that go through the lake seems really annoying to me personally. It is a heaven for all the asmr video enthusiasts. Some lucky people would be able to see turtles taking a sunbath on top of a old floating wood trunk putting their neck out, amidst a very few and minimal Sunrays that reach beyond the thick canopy and get a click, as they would suddenly jump back to the water. I guess they have some kind of motion sensing sensors. But there are a lot of contamination even though they have mentioned many regulations. Cleaning could be better. We can definitely see a lot of romantic youth here and there as they offer picturesque views ,so definitely a great place for a date. At the tip there is a small seating, facing the lake and have the sunset and hear the waves. When I went the watch tower was in extremely dilapidated condition as the stairs were almost rusted and extinct. The walk is almost 45 min one way so to and for it would be 1.5 hours. The park closes around 4:00pm. A boating after this would be great it costs around 800 for an hour in a sikhara boat

A good place for a day's trip. Although we went during the summer vacation time so it was a bit crowded. And people made a lot of noise which is not really conducive for birds to be present. We didn't see many birds because of this. The place is well maintained. We took the KTDC package for bird sanctuary and speedboat to Pathiramanal which was great. The walk through the sanctuary is good (there is a bit to walk so be prepared). You can see boats moving through the canal at the side. The speedboat trip was great. Our boat operator was a really nice person. He took us slow and steady through the canal and when we reached the open water, he literally took off :D its a really exhilarating feeling. The wind will be crazy and there will be water spray everywhere especially if you are sitting at the back of the boat. He dropped us off for 20 mins at the Pathiramanal island which again has a around ten mins of a walk. Nothing fancy but you can enjoy the view of the back waters. The boat ride is the highlight. For miles and miles you can see just blue water, blue skies, and white fluffy clouds. It's very refreshing. KTDC officials were really friendly. And they provide us with life jackets and everything and the operators are very safe while they drive the boats. Nothing to worry about but don't try to be too adventurous and stand on the boat or anything while it's moving. Also be careful - use your phones/cameras on board only if you feel you can handle the pressure of the wind.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary in Alappuzha offers a serene and natural escape for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. The entrance fee of 100 per head is quite reasonable for the experience it offers. The presence of a parking fee suggests that the facility is well-maintained and organized. The sanctuary is expansive, providing ample space for visitors to explore. The sounds of birds chirping add to the ambiance, although the actual bird sightings can vary. It's not uncommon to see a limited number of bird species on certain visits, as bird activity can depend on the time of day and season One highlight of the sanctuary is the presence of various small animals, which can make the visit even more exciting. The atmosphere, especially during hot weather, offers a refreshing and cool escape due to the lush greenery and water bodies. It's worth noting that the ban on plastics is a positive step for preserving the environment. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary also offers birdwatching towers, enhancing the experience for enthusiasts. The walking paths and trails allow visitors to immerse themselves in nature, making it a must-visit destination for those who enjoy outdoor activities and appreciate the beauty of Kerala's wildlife and natural surroundings.

Best place to spend your holiday. I visited there on last September. Relaxing & refreshing experience. Nice walking into the forest like place. Can see many types of migrating birds & natural beauty. Good climate. So many trees & plants in the both sides of the walkway. There is enough parking space available, but not free. They are charging a small ticket fee to visit the santuary. I think it's an ideal place for couples to walk together. There is butterfly garden before the entrance of santuary. Approx. 2 km walkway to the watch tower. Carry enough drinking water with you. There is a sitting arrangement inside the santuary near to the Vembanadu Lake. We can watch the beauty of the lake and see moving houseboates from there. There are 2 watch towers available at the end of the walkway. You need to climb the tower to watch birds. I saw very few birds in the walkway. But watched & photographed so many types of birds from the 2nd watch tower. Recommended for those who love to watch birds & nature and planning to spend a half day in natural beauty with family. Avoid rainy season visit because of the difficulty of walking due to mud & water.
