Varkala Bali Mandapam This is an edifice located on the southern side of papanasam beach at Varkala, Kerala. It is basically a covered hall built in Kerala Heritage House architecture. It has pillars painted with murals. It is a center authorised by the devaswom board. The mandapam is primarily used to conduct the post funeral rituals of Hindus who consign the mortal remains of their departed relatives into the sea here. During the annual vali vavu a number of people gather here to offer reverence to their departed ones by conducting rituals. Fixed charges are to be paid to perform the rituals. On the beach you will find priests who display their name and background on a display board camping under beach umbrellas. They too help devotees to perform the rituals. You will also see a number of pigeons and crows in and around this mandapam feeding on the ritual offerings. Photos by Viswas Menon © Viswas Menon Write up compiled by Viswas Menon

Varkala Bali Mandapam Hindus offer “bali” (a ritual or offering for deceased relatives) after the death of a near one. Usually the sons offer the “bali” for their parents. If sons are not there, any close relative can perform this on their behalf. “Bali” is usually performed on all days after death till the 16th day, on the 41st day after death and on all death anniversaries. Since it is not easy to do such rituals at home, people go to places like Varkala or Thiruvallom Parasurama Temple in Trivandrum. Varkala has a special “Bali Mandapom” or platform to perform bali. This mandapom is open on all days of the year. Rituals can be performed from 6.00 AM to 11.00 AM. Priests are available to guide the devotees. All the required items like cooked rice, flowers etc., would be supplied there on payment of the required fee.
