The Kovalam Lighthouse, located at the iconic Lighthouse Beach in Kovalam, Kerala, is one of the standout features of the area. It's an attractive and functional landmark that adds a distinct charm to the beach's landscape. Here’s a detailed review of the lighthouse:

Pros: Stunning Views: Climbing the lighthouse offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding area, including the Arabian Sea and the beautiful coastline. It's a fantastic spot for photography, particularly at sunrise or sunset when the colors are most vibrant. Historical Significance: The lighthouse, built in 1903, has a rich history and is an important part of Kovalam's maritime heritage. It's a great place to learn about the history of navigation in the region. Great Spot for Relaxing: The area around the lighthouse is peaceful, providing a great spot to relax and enjoy the scenic views of the sea and the beach below. Accessibility: The lighthouse is open to the public, and visitors can climb to the top. It's a relatively short and easy climb, making it accessible to most people. Unique Architecture: The red-and-white striped design of the lighthouse is striking and makes it easy to spot from a distance. It’s a beautiful architectural feature against the backdrop of the blue sea. Cons: Climbing Limitations: While the climb is not very difficult, it might be challenging for people with mobility issues, as there are a number of stairs to reach the top. Crowded During Peak Season: Like the beach, the lighthouse can get crowded during peak tourist seasons, so it may not offer the peaceful, solitary experience some visitors desire. Limited Amenities: There aren't many facilities around the lighthouse, such as shaded areas or seating, so be prepared to spend most of your time either climbing or enjoying the view from the top. Timing Constraints: The lighthouse typically has specific opening hours, and sometimes, it's closed due to maintenance, so it’s a good idea to check the timings before visiting. Tips: Visit Early or Late: For a less crowded experience, consider visiting the lighthouse early in the morning or late in the evening. Take Water and Snacks: If you plan on spending time in the area, especially for the climb, it's a good idea to bring along some water and light snacks. Photography: If you're a photography enthusiast, make sure to bring your camera for some spectacular shots, particularly during...

Vizhinjam Lighthouse

Vizhinjam Lighthouse is popularly known as Kovalam Lighthouse and is situated near Kovalam beach in Kerala. It started functioning on 30 June 1972. Vizhinjam was a busy seaport in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Before the current light was installed, there were no lighthouses at this location. A day mark beacon (flag mast) must have been there in 18th century. After 19th century, this port was in a neglected state. A lighted beacon was constructed in 1925 at nearby Kolachal. Subsequently, a day mark beacon was provided at Vizhinjam during 1960.

The tower is cylindrical with a height of 36 meters. The paint markings are red and white bands. The lighthouse is equipped with metal halide lamps and direct drive mechanism. The light source was modified on 30 April 2003.

The Light House is located towards the southern end of the beach and it's on a cape. There is an observation platform from which you can see Poovar in one direction and the famous Beemapalli mosque on the other. You can reach this platform by climbing a total of 142 steps.

The climb may be tedious for those with knee problems and breathing issues or heart ailments as it may be strenuous for them. There is a lift facility too. But climbing the steps is an interesting experience as one can see the surrounding scenes through the windows at different elevations. Shoes and other footwear are not allowed inside the light house and have to be left at the entrance near the ticket counter.

September 21st every year is celebrated as Light House Day and on that day all the facilities in this light house are offered free of cost.

One can enjoy the beautiful scenery from the top of the light house. Entry to the lighthouse is with ticket. Better to visit during weekdays when the crowd is less and one can spend more time at the viewing gallery. When rush is more during holidays and weekends the light house staff restrict the time one can spend on the top.

Visit in the evening to avoid heat during the day time. Also in the evening one can view the sun set from atop. The light house opens in the morning from 7 a.m. Entry closes at 5.45 p.m. and the people who are already in and at the top are asked to vacate by around 7 p.m.

Parking space is available in the premises. There is a small children’s play area and park in the premises.

Located in the picturesque town of Kovalam, the Lighthouse is a must-visit attraction offering breathtaking views and a glimpse into the region's rich maritime history. My recent visit to the Lighthouse left a lasting impression, and I'm pleased to share my experience with fellow travelers.

Standing tall against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea, the Lighthouse at Kovalam is not just a beacon for sailors but also a beacon of charm for tourists. The panoramic vistas from the top are simply mesmerizing, especially during sunset when the sky paints itself in hues of orange and pink. It's a perfect spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike, offering unparalleled views of the coastline and the crashing waves below.

Visiting the Lighthouse with my family was a delightful experience. The ticketing process was straightforward, and the staff were courteous and helpful throughout. We arrived around 4 pm to ensure we had enough time to explore the premises and ascend to the top. The climb to the viewing platform was manageable, though visitors should be aware that it involves stairs and may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.

The Lighthouse compound itself is well-maintained, with clean pathways and informative displays detailing the history of the lighthouse and its significance in guiding ships along the Malabar Coast. It's not just a place to see; it's a place to learn about Kerala's maritime heritage.

One highlight of our visit was definitely the sunset view. As the evening descended, we watched in awe as the sky transformed into a canvas of colors, casting a warm glow over the sea and the surrounding cliffs. It was a serene moment, perfect for relaxation and reflection.

The closing time at 5 pm was slightly early for our liking, as we would have loved to linger a bit longer to soak in the atmosphere. However, it did ensure that we left with ample daylight, which is important for navigating the descent safely.

Overall, the Lighthouse at Kovalam is a gem of a tourist attraction that should not be missed when visiting Kerala. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a serene spot to unwind with family, this place ticks all the boxes. I highly recommend planning your visit around sunset for an...
