Beautiful Spot with Cultural Significance – Needs Better Maintenance
I recently visited the Buddhist Pagoda located near Eden Gardens in Kolkata, and while the place has undeniable charm and cultural value, it definitely requires more attention and care to reach its full potential.
The garden area surrounding the pagoda is quite peaceful and has the potential to be a wonderful urban retreat. It’s a great place to take a quiet walk or sit and reflect, especially considering its location in the middle of a bustling city. The greenery, when maintained, provides a serene contrast to the nearby traffic and noise.
The pagoda structure itself is beautiful, built in the traditional Burmese architectural style. It stands as a symbol of peace and spirituality, and it's great to see such a monument in the heart of Kolkata. However, its current condition leaves much to be desired. The structure is in need of basic maintenance and cleanliness. Paint is fading, there are visible signs of wear and tear, and the surroundings could be much cleaner. Broken tiles, faded signboards, and unkempt pathways take away from the dignity and beauty the place deserves.
This spot could be a real gem for both locals and tourists if the concerned authorities take proper steps to maintain it. With regular upkeep, better cleanliness, and maybe some informational signage, it could become a must-visit heritage and spiritual site.
In summary, the Buddhist Pagoda and the adjacent garden are worth visiting for a quiet moment or some photographs, but don’t expect too much in terms of upkeep. Giving it 3 stars for its potential and cultural value — but hoping to see...
Read moreThe Buddhist pagoda or more popularly called the Burmese pagoda was placed in the Eden gardens about 150 years ago and was brought from Burma (now known as Myanmar).
The pagoda stands on a green strip of land and more or less about 80 percent of it is surrounded by a lake. The beautiful woodwork was designed by Ma Kin of Prome, around 1852. On a visitation to Prome of Burma, in 1853, Lord Dalhousie admired the structure and wished it to be brought to Kolkata (then Calcutta). The Pagoda was then shipped to the country in 1854. After 3 months of work by Burmese artisans, it was erected again in Eden Gardens in 1856.
This pagoda has a tiered Buddhist Shrine, formerly called Tazaung, in which the tiers shortens as it rises and has a spire on top. Various characters from mythology such as animals and birds are delicately curved on the woods.
A magnificent image of Lord Buddha is inside the pagoda. The deity has a...
