I recently visited Patuli Jheel Park, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty and tranquility of this park.

During my visit to Patuli Jheel Park, I also had the opportunity to try some of the new food stalls that have recently opened up in the park. The food stalls offer a variety of options for visitors, ranging from traditional snacks to full meals. Here are some of the new food stalls that I tried:

Cha O Nachiketa - This is the best tea stall in Patuli, and it lives up to its name. They offer a wide variety of teas, ranging from traditional masala chai to flavored teas like lemon, ginger, and mint. The tea is freshly brewed and has a rich aroma and flavor that is hard to resist. Momo Man - If you're a fan of momos, then this is the place for you. Momo Man offers a variety of momos, including veg, chicken, and pork, that are freshly made and steamed to perfection. The momos are served with a spicy dipping sauce that adds an extra kick to the dish. Khabo ki - This food stall offers a range of snacks and light meals, including sandwiches, rolls, and chaat. The food is freshly made and has a homemade taste that is hard to find in commercial food stalls. The veg sandwich and aloo tikki chaat are must-tries. Haringhata Meats - This food stall specializes in meat-based dishes and offers a range of kebabs, biryanis, and curries. The meat is of high quality and is sourced from Haringhata, a town in West Bengal known for its meat products. The mutton biryani and chicken kebab are particularly popular. Patuli Jeel Park in Kolkata is one of those urban spots that has the perfect potential to be both relaxing and lively at the same time. Located just beside the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, this park draws people from all corners of the city — families, couples, joggers, photographers, and anyone looking for a bit of calm at the end of a busy day. Over time, it has become one of the most recognizable leisure zones in South Kolkata, and despite a few areas that could use improvement, it remains a genuinely pleasant place to unwind, especially in the evenings.

The lake, or “jeel,” is truly the centerpiece of this area. When you arrive at sunset, the soft reflection of the sky on the water creates a beautiful atmosphere, and the wide walking paths along the lake make it easy to spend a couple of hours just strolling or sitting quietly. The open spaces, benches, and planted trees create a welcoming green environment amid the city’s concrete backdrop. Local residents often come here for morning and evening walks, while others come simply to enjoy a quick street-food meal by the water.

The food stalls near the entrance and along the main walking stretch add great charm to this place. There’s a variety of local snacks available — from chaat, momos, and rolls to fresh fruit juices and tea. The food is tasty and affordable, which makes this a go-to place for casual hangouts. During festivals or weekends, the area becomes lively with music, bubble vendors, and small gatherings — the atmosphere feels joyful without being too crowded, especially just before sunset.

However, the park sadly doesn’t reach its full potential because of some neglect in maintenance. The floating market, once a creative idea and one of the main attractions of Patuli Jeel Park, now looks abandoned. The wooden walkways are damaged in places, and many of the small shops that once floated on boats are no longer functioning. What could have been a unique shopping experience on water has turned into a somewhat deserted area. It’s disappointing to see such a great concept go unused — hopefully, local authorities will revive the space in the future.

Another area needing attention is cleanliness. The pathways are generally fine, but the water quality of the lake is not good. The water often looks murky, with visible algae and debris floating around. This takes away from what could otherwise be a scenic and serene sight. Occasional cleaning efforts are visible, but more consistent management would make a big difference. Proper waste disposal points and awareness among visitors could keep the area cleaner without much extra cost.

Despite these downsides, Patuli Jeel Park still makes for a good evening destination. The lighting along the park corridors gives it a safe and pleasant ambiance even after sunset, and the breeze across the lake adds to the comfort. It’s a great place to walk, talk, and relax away from the noise of traffic. Watching families, children, and young groups enjoying simple moments lends a community feel that makes the park special in a subtle way.

If maintained better, Patuli Jeel Park could easily become one of the most beautiful spots in Kolkata’s southern zone. Even in its current state, it’s a worthy place to visit for an evening break, good food, and a peaceful walk. With some restoration of the floating market and regular cleanup of the lake water, the area would reflect the charm it deserves — a perfect blend of nature, food, and leisure within the heart...

AMBIENCE AND LIGHTING The Patuli Jheel Park, also known as the Patuli Lake Side, has a replica of the Howrah Bridge and the Biswa Bangla globe. The lightwork on the Howrah Bridge replica is a bright sight across the lake in the evening. Fountains have also been installed and come on in the evening.

This area has been transformed and beautified in phases over the last few years. However, the biggest transformation took place in April — temporary food stalls were given a permanent place, more statues were added and lightworks were improved.

A replica of the Dakshineswar temple is the newest addition to Patuli Jheel Park. There is also a massive Durga idol, along with statues of Rabindranath Tagore, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. Other statues of characters like Chota Bheem, Bal Ganesh, etc., are installed for children.

The trend of installing glowing letters in Kolkata can be seen here too. The two installations of Amar Bhalobashar Shohor Kolkata and Amar Bhalobashar Patuli are already doing the rounds on the social media platforms.

ATTRACTIONS FOR CHILDREN

Little Deeptarko Bhattacharya travels from north Kolkata to Patuli for his singing classes with his mother Swati Bhattacharya every week. Post his classes, Deeptarko, who is 7 years old, stops at Patuli Jheel Park for some fun time. “We make a pitstop here often to get some food and take a walk. He enjoys the environment here. This is a very good initiative undertaken by the government. Not only children, adults too enjoy the place for its beauty,” Swati.

Like Deeptarko, many other kids visit this place for its modest children’s park that has a swing, see-saw and slide. Post sunset, the lighting and fountain are other things that attract children.

In the winter, the place acts as a complete ecosystem with migratory birds and winter bloom. So, it is a great opportunity for parents to bring children closer to nature

TASTY DELIGHTS ON THE ‘Foodpath’!

Whether one takes a stroll or hangs out, satiating the taste buds is not an issue here. There are about 10 food stalls on the stretch called ‘Foodpath’. These stalls are offered by some of the locality’s favourite cafes and food chains. One can enjoy a cup of hot chocolate tea from Cha o Nachiketa, or a steaming plate of momos from Momo Man. Dig into KFC-style fried chicken from Khabo ki? Or Kolkata’s favourite roll and street-style chowmein from Baithakkhana. Cafe Positive, Haringhata, Jibhe Jol etc. also serve up some scrumptious delights. A water ATM is also installed on the ‘Foodpath’, where one can get cold drinking water. At the end of this stretch is a quaint stall called Sentu's Kolkata Canvas, which sells Kolkata-themed souvenirs, from tea-coasters to coffee mugs.

Pocket-friendly snacking from vendors

Apart from the permanent stalls, local vendors too have found business here. People also opt to enjoy a bite of freshly roasted corn on the cob, a sip of hot lebu cha or a warm mix of ghoti-gorom. Ice-cream and cotton candy vendors also make good business on busy days.
