My visit to this Unique Temple that once served as a Palace of the Mewad Royals, was , in fact, prompted by a Divine Invitation, so to say, by Udaipur City's favourite & revered, Lok Devtha, Shri Sagasji Raj MAHARAJ himself. Many times in the past, did i visit; every time it was more like visiting a dear friend , a familiar one , at that, though i never knew about him, in this, very birth! All the time, searching for the History of Sagasji, the Temple & Bhajans, came to nought, as i come from a distant Tamizh Nadu. Just a couple of days before the present visit, after many years, i was surprised to view a half hour program on the YouTube, with the Lady Coordinator interviewing devotees at the very Temple i was planning to go. I got to know the life history of the Lok Devtha along with the history of the place. So, when I was walking in the busy lane, very near Udaipur's Udaya pol monument, opposite to the Central Bus station- half Kilometre from the Railway station-i decided to look out for details, to be published here, for the benefit of non- Hindi -knowing -people. ON the ground floor, in the spacious Room, a figure of a cobra, carved out in black stone, occupies the central place. Walls have pictures of Sagasji Raj & the Bhopas instrumental in securing this place from the reluctant Royal family. I learnt that this Room opens only once annually during the Mela, however, one can clearly see & pray standing outside, through the grilled gate, at any time. At once we experience a spiritual feeling: people get drawn in. Beside, there is a flight of steps taking us to the Main Temple, upstairs. We read from the Inscription in Hindi, dated Baisakh Shudh 12, Vikram samvat 2054, that this Mahal, called the Kanwar padha Mahal was transferred to the public by the then Raj Mathaji, at udaipur, in Vikram samvat 2032 to honor the last wishes of the wife of Sagasji Raj, MAHARAJ KanwaraniVichathraKanwari , D/o Rao Karna Singh of Bikaner, who became a Sathi (by Agni Snan) at Bikaner, her native place on Magh Krishna Dwadashi -Trayodashi, Friday Vikram samvat 1720, corresponding to 15 th January 1664 AD. She entered sathithva ( Vykunta prapti), after her young husband, Maharaj Sagasji bhavji, (Maharaj Raj Kumar Sishodiya Kumar Shri Sultan (Surthar)Singh ji of the Rathod clan)was unjustly killed by his own father, the then King, Rana Sri Rajsinghji, who was misled by one of his wives, as she was jealous of the popularity of Sagasji, the heir to the Kingdom. The Raja atoning, embarked on public welfare works in his Kingdom. The Inscription thanks BhopajiUdaybhan ji, Menaji, Gumanji for their devoted efforts to secure the Palace from the Royal family. True to the words in the Inscription in the Temple, every one, irrespective of status, voluntarily helps in every activity. Everywhere, cleanliness is maintained: we notice many Holy slabs on the walls enroute to the Main Temple., including the one to pay tribute to a Muslim Saint. Plotted plants along the way create a cool & serene mood. We first worship Ganesh ji (who is along with his consorts, Ridhi & Siddhi);then we proceed to the place of Hanuman ji & later, to Matha ji 's. There's a Homa kund before Matha ji. Finally, we enter the large high ceiling Hall that's also artistically constructed. It resembles a Royal Court Hall. On all sides of this Hall , in the walls above, we see pictures/ photos of Sagasji dressed in different attractive colorful attires, nearly 12 in number. Devotees, with deep respect & love, have, decorated Bhavji & so, photos were enlarged & fixed. You are ready to meet the Divinities at the reverentially maintained SANCTUM SANCTORUM. Rituals and disciplined approach, at this particular place, reminds us of the etiquettes observed in front of the Royalty of yore. Even the low Entrance makes us enter bowing. At the centre, we have darshan of the Mewad Kingdom's actual Ruler, the Lord Ekhlingh ji (the three faces, representing the Holy Trinity in the Hindu faith. Here, there's a 2- metre-high Shiva lingam. Sagasji & his sathi wife are on...
