Read moreDasaratha Mahal is commonly known as Bada Asthan and Badi Jagah that is found in Ramkot Ayodhya in Faizabad of Uttar Pradesh state in India. It is in the heart of Ayodhya town, which was once upon a time capital of king Dasaratha the father of Lord Sri Rama. This was the palace where Sri Rama was born and spent his childhood days along with three brothers, laxman, Bharath and Shatrughna. The present palace has a shrine of Lord Ram, along with his consort Seetha and brother Lakshman as foremost divine beings.
In reality it is not the same building as existed in Threthayug, some thousands of years ago. But constructed in the same place where that palace existed according to historical records. The big and colourful entrance with pleasing paintings welcomes the visitors with all pleasantness. The moment one enters the shrine one will be fixed with religious devotion to Lord Rama. No wonder that one may join with the chorus of other devotees muttering or shouting ‘Ram Rama’ The Sadhus and saints are present inside wearing saffron clothes will be reciting the name of Lord Rama or singing bhajan songs in praise of Rama. Some will be reading the epic Ramayana by sage Valmiki or of Tulsidas. Some artistes will be found dancing and singing while playing on musical instruments. The religious environment may move one, even if one were to be an atheist, to chant the name of Rama, silently, if not loudly. That is what I saw while I was there standing in front of Lord Rama.
Here one cannot expect a vast and spacious grand palace as in Mysore, Jaipur and other places because this so called palace is much smaller when compared to the other palaces. It is not as big as one may expect it to be that of original royal abode of King Dasaratha. The name itself sentimentally attracts the devotees who come here to visit and see the things inside the place where Rama was said to have born in the Ramayana and spent his childhood and boyhood days. The town Ayodhya itself is related to Sri Rama, the brave super man of the epic Ramayana. What all one could see in Ayodhya is in one way or the other linked with the legendary leader who is looked upon as God, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
The word ‘Palace’ makes one to imagine a vast and spacious and gorgeous building with separate luxurious chambers for the king, queen, concubines and host of servants, guards and Khojas (transgender persons) as explained vividly in the novel “Imperial Woman” of...
