A Temple built by the Mughal Governor of Amritsar This is one of my favourite temples in Vrindavan: Jugal Kishor. I just love the simple yet beautiful carving above the doorway of Krishna lifting up Mount Govardhan, flanked by peacocks and cows It's built on Keshi Ghat, the place where Lord Krishna is said to have killed the horse-shaped Keshi demon According to AW Entwhistle's book on Braj, the temple was built c. 1627 by Naunkaran, a Kacchwaha General from Shekhawati who served with Akbars forces and governed the area around Amritsar. Under Akbar, Man Singh of Amer (Jaipur) had been the undisputed leader of the Kacchwaha clan and the most prominent Rajput nobleman in the Mughal Court. But after Akbar's death, there was a succesion crisis. Man Singh backed Prince Khusrao to succeed the Emperor, whilst Naunkaran and his brother Raiysal Darbari backed Prince Jahangir. Jahangir came out on top, and so the two brothers found themselves elevated to a prestige that had never before been possible. To assert that their authority was now independent of Man Singh, the brothers then constructed two new temples in Vrindavan: Gopinath and Jugal Kishor. The murti was taken and moved to Panna in Madhya Pradesh to save it from desecration during the reign of Aurangzeb. Several decades later, in 1758, Raja Hindupat Singh Bundela built a new temple for the deity The old temple is locked by the ASI today. For more see A.W. ENTWHISTLE: BRAJ CENTRE OF

The story behind the temple is millennia old, but the temple itself is new, at least in relative terms. Built in 1627, the Jugal Kishore Temple is currently one of the oldest surviving temples in Vrindavan. The Mughal Emperor Akbar visited Vrindavan sometime in 1570 CE, giving permission to build four temples. The Jugal Kishore Temple was one of the approved temples constructed by the Gaudiya Vaishnavas. Located by the famed Keshi Ghat at the lower end of Vrindavan, the temple was eventually built by Sambat. It was completed in 1684, during the reign of the next Mughal Emperor, Jehangir. Like the other three ancient temples ordered by Akbar, this one too is made of red sandstone, with a rather large 25 square foot choir and a main entrance to the east. Unlike the other three temples, though, the Jugal Kishore Temple still has its original deity intact inside
