This is a comment for all people that are fimilar with hiking a mountain.

To get to the blue fire spot: start at base camp (paved road, good condition). going 480 meters (altitude) up. 300 meters down. there is no chance that you miss the way. Cache maps ahead (no cell phone coverage as soon you descend the crater).

Tour planning: When you under normal (alpine) condition and have proper foot wear: Insist of being at the entrance gate at 01.45 AM at any circumstance. You will be probably of the fastest 10% of all people visiting blue fire. 80% have moderate/poor condition, many walking up with flat profile shoes creating a big 'slide show' at the descend. So be ahead of the traffic jam. When you have seen it, return before the mass of people is coming blocking to way to the crater.

Guide: No need for a guide. No chance to miss the way. Saturday to Sunday you can expect some 100s of people with the same goal. Although having a package (gas mask, transportation, paper work for entrance) might be useful for your convinience. Watch out for fair pricing. 4x4 cars are absolutely not needed. Actually you can even rent Grab/Gojek for 8 hours Ijen tour to see reference price.

Medical: Certificate needed. You get it in Banyuwangi (e.g Shinta Clinic) for 40k, takes 5 minutes including blood pressure test. (In my opinion this is a paper act only, they should better do an assesment for your shoes..)

Toxic gases: You have a gas mask to protect yourself from SO2 (sulfur dioxide). Burning sulfer (=blue flame) is forming SO2. Take it serious! Wear a proper gas mask when you are close to lake level, where the blue fire is situated. SO2 is forming sulfuric acid in your lung and eyes by contact. You will also feel burning eyes when standing to close to blue fire. I recommend to wear safety glasses / swim glasses at 20 m around blue fire. At your own discretion.

Worth to travel: Please be at proper health condition. Test it before - if you are fit of ascending 500 m of height. Do not go if you are not confident or have no proper equipment. It is touristik especially at weekends. But in the end it is something you will not see at any...

First of all let's get the good things out of the way: the scenery, including the blue flames and the turquoise crater lake are a gorgeous show of natural beauty - although we didn't get the full picture due to the fact that it was raining heavily most of the time, but that's nature.

Now for the reason of the one star rating and why I'd give it less than that if possible. Never have I seen such blatant, dangerous disregard of safety in my life. The whole path up the volcano and especially into the crater to the spot with the blue flames were absolutely packed with people, most of whom lacked the proper equipment and experience for the difficulty of the hike. On multiple occasions, my girlfriend and I were pushed in narrow sections, which could have easily led to a fatal fall as there are many exposed areas right next to steep drop offs into the crater. This was further escalated by the guides constantly telling people to hurry up - something that should absolutely never happen in such treacherous terrain. The way up from the blue flames is the same as the way down which further exacerbated this issue. We are both experienced hikers and the trail itself, while certainly not easy or even beginner friendly, didn't pose much of a challenge to us, but the reckless behaviour of tourists who have no business of being on any mountain of this caliber and guides alike made it incredibly dangerous. Right now we are just happy we made it down alive and well. If you value your life, do yourself a favour and...

While the ability to see the blue flame phenomenon is pretty spectacular, as are the views from above the crater, the descend to the crater is outright dangerous. Not just because it's steep, slippery and narrow, but first and foremost because of the amount of people there. They open the gates at 2 a.m. and even if you start exactly then, you have to be able to maintain very good pace to see the flames and then the sunrise up top. But the way some people absolutely disregard safety just get there as fast as possible is astonishing. We were trying to be very careful while going down and the amount of absolute idiots trying to push their way by you makes the descent a horrible experience. Buddy, there's a hundred people in front of us, you won't be there first... and even as we were going up, there were still hundreds going down still even if they had no chance of seeing the flame anymore (you can't see it unless it's dark). As some other commenters have said here, they should 100% limit the amount of tickets being sold. I would add having a guide with you be absolutely mandatory.
