The ancient seat of the Fitzgeralds, public access is not usually allowed even though tourist information says it is open to the public. I was there when it was supposed to be open and it was closed. Hence only four stars.
This castle was built in the early 13th century by Maurice Fitzgerald and became the main residence of the Kildare FitzGeralds. These were easily the most powerful family in Norman Ireland. Garrett Fitzgerald, aka Great Earl of Kildare, was effectively Viceroy from 1487 - 1513. But the family had ideas above the station that Henry Óg Tudor had in mind for them and they fell from grace.
Both Henry Tudors traced their claim to the throne from their link to Pembroke. This made them part of the Welsh nobility and, as Aoife, daughter of Diarmaid Mac Murrough married the (displaced) 2nd Earl of Pembroke, gave Henry Óg a claim to the crown of Ireland. Although he was the eighth king called Henry over England he was not only the first Henry to claim to be King of Ireland but he was also the first person to claim the title King of Ireland.
