Pretty sure this is the only place in the entire world that you can find legitimate and good quality Manx tartan!! My fiance was able to purchase 10 yards to bring back with us to Texas, so he can have his wedding kilt made, which is so very important to him. We didn't realize we needed an appointment to be fitted, but the gentleman that helped us was wonderful! I can't recall the woman's name who was there as well, but she offered to source us some wool to make a crosh cuirn, which my fiance has been trying to find information on for 10+ years. We were so appreciative of her generosity! My fiance's Manx grandmother had a crosh cuirn in her home, and not much was known about it after she passed away. Fiance was incredibly excited to finally find out what it was, how to make it (very specific steps!), and that we can carry on the tradition in our home back in Texas, USA. While my fiance was handling his tartan purchase, I took a look around. The items they sell are incredibly well made, good quality wool and fibres. Lots of options of hats, jumpers, gloves and mittens, children and adult sizes, and other odds and ends that go with what you'd find at a woolery. I definitely want to pick up a few items the next time we are in Laxey!
Be aware that finding it is a smidgen is difficult, but a free parking lot is just next to the building. If you're going up the stairs, be mindful not to slip if it's been...
Read moreLaxey Woolley Mills is a charming gem of old world artisan and craftsmanship, and a must for anyone visiting Isle of Man. The owner still weaves everything traditionally on a loom. Laxey Wollen Mills is also the only place in which someone can purchase authentic Manx Wool clothing and home goods whether in Manx Tartan or other classic patterns. They also sell sheep skin rugs and shearling outerwear. I have many wool rugs (blankets, if you’re American) and a shearling hat from Laxey Woollen Mills that I absolutely love. I had a few blankets shipped back to the US and nothing is more warm and cozy then having a woollie from the Isle of Man to hide under on a cold winter night.
When you visit the Woollen Mills be sure to visit the art gallery on the second floor to see local artists exhibiting works of art inspired by the island. To make an afternoon of your visit, finish up at the Tea Room and enjoy fresh, homemade and locally sourced sandwiches, soups, and tasty treats (located on the...
Read moreA nice place to visit if you're changing at Laxey for the mountain. So many nice things available, not just Manx tartan goods. Not the cheapest, but as these are unusual goods of a good quality that aren't available anywhere else it seems reasonable. Be careful though because the Mill shop and the upstairs gift shop offer so many nice things, you'll end up spending more than you thought! We didn't sample their tea shop, but I hear good things about it from...
