St German’s Cathedral in Peel is a relative newcomer compared with the ancient ruins of Peel Castle across the harbour, yet it holds a central place in the modern spiritual life of the Isle of Man. Built in the late 19th century in red sandstone, the church was only elevated to cathedral status in 1980 when the Diocese of Sodor and Man chose it as its seat. The name recalls St German of Auxerre, a 5th-century bishop said to have visited the island to combat Pelagian heresy, linking the cathedral to some of the oldest Christian traditions in Britain.

Its position in Peel, overlooking the Irish Sea, continues the old tradition of the town as both a religious and maritime centre.
