The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth, known also as St. Gabriel's Church or the Beer Mary Church is located in the church square, north of Nazareth Square.
The church stands near a spring which provided the city's water consumption from the beginning of the settlement, and which was associated with the gospel to Mary from the 2nd century.
According to this tradition, generally accepted in the Orthodox Church, as the Virgin drew water from the spring, the angel Gabriel appeared before her and told her that she conceived and that she was going to give birth to the Son of God:
Due to the sanctity of the place, a Byzantine church was built in the 6th century, and a Catholic-Crusader church in the early 12th century, to which the spring water was channeled through a short tunnel. In 1263 the church was destroyed by the Mamluks. From 1628 to 1634 the spring was the possession of the Franciscans who erected a small building above it. In 1749, the ruler of the Galilee, Dahr al-Omar, granted permission to the Greek-Orthodox community to establish the church, and it was established between 1750-1769.
