Church of the Annunciation. After Sea Of Galilee it was to Nazareth to see Church of the Annunciation. The normal closing time of church was 5:00PM. We got stuck very badly in traffic jam.By the time coach off loaded us at a point beyond which coaches could not go, it was already 5:30 PM and become very dark indeed. We had no hope of seeing the church. Nevertheless walked up to it, a distance of half a kilometre or so. We were greatly and very pleasantly surprised to see that church was still open. Apparently lot of tourist coaches were stuck in traffic jam. News had obviously reached Church authorities who decided to keep it open beyond the usual closing time. The church is built over a place where Christians believed is the cave where Virgin Mary lived and the place where angel Gabriel appeared to her and announced that she would conceive and bear the Son of God, Jesus – The announcement of angle telling this to Mary is known as Annunciation. The church is an imposing edifice of modernistic design. It was built in 1969. It is topped up by a very high grand cupola almost 179 ft high . A lantern is mounted on top of the cupola. Supposedly showing the light to the world. Impressive white façade is etched with reliefs of Virgin Mary and preachers Luke, John, Mathew and Mark. At the extreme top of the triangle is a bronze statue of Jesus Christ

CHURCH OF ANNUNCIATION – NAZARETH - NORTHERN ISRAEL : Also called the Catholic Basilica of the Annunciation - Located over the cave where Mary lived and heard the voice of Archangel Gabriel that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Most High would overshadow her and she would conceive Jesus the Son of God - The cave is protected over by constructing a church, the Church of the Annunciation – This was constructed in 1969 over the ruins of the old churches - The first shrine is believed to be built sometime in the middle of the 4th century – It comprised an altar in the cave in which Mary lived – The cave can be seen as such in the ground floor with a fencing in front - Front door of the church depicts major events in Jesus' life. As there is difference of opinion about the actual place of receiving of Gabriel’s message, there is yet another church, the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation - This is located about 650 meters away from the Catholic Basilica of Annunciation over a spring which is believed to be the place where Mary heard Gabriel's voice.

The Basilica of the Annunciation, also known as the Catholic Gospel Church, is the most impressive and spectacular site in the city of Nazareth and is considered one of the most sacred churches in the Christian world. The church, which stands out in its downtown presence, is built on the site of Mary's mother's home. On the lower level of the church is the Holy of Holies: the cave of Mary, in which it was discovered. The first church was built there already in 427 AD and has since been destroyed and erected few times. The current building, which was inaugurated in 1969, preserves the remains of the former churches and is one of the most magnificent churches in the Middle East. The impressive basilica is 59.5 meters high and contains an exhibition of colorful mosaic pictures of the Holy Family. The mosaics were prepared by Christian communities from all over the world and each piece reflects the national character of the country that sent the piece. Bottom line: a must see site for christians and everyone who loves tradition and historical sites!

This magnificent and beautiful basilica was built over the place where according to Catholic tradition Maria received the announciation of bearing god.s child as well as on top of the ruins of a more ancient church. It combines perfectly and intelligently a modern structure over the ancient architecture of the older church... perserving parts of it, and building around it, making it one of the more architectually interesting churches to visit, besides its apparent beauty. The mosaics are beatiful and the large colored glass window allows the devine light to enter in the best architectual tradition of churches. The great hall allows great space and freedom of movement, but the truly magnifucent aspect is the preservation of the old church on which this modern structure was built. Also the high cieling with its angular shape truly bring out a modern feel to a very ancient strory.

My trip here was an experience unlike most who journey here. The grounds and church were empty, due to Covid-19. I spent a while wandering around the outside, marveling at the breathtaking murals representing a variety of nations. The architecture is gorgeous, with beautiful reliefs and inscriptions, in both the stone structure and wooden doors. The interior of the church is marvelous and brings great reverence to the archaeological site which sits at the center of the interior. The remains are extraordinary and quite well preserved. The columns are something to behold, as well as the inscriptions. I was awestruck at the architectural design of the atrium and the domed overhead. The quiet atmosphere struck an awesome tone, impressing upon me the nature of this location.
