The new church was built in 1959 on the remains of an ancient Byzantine church from the fourth century AD by the Italian architect Giovanni Motzio. The church is built with two floors. We got stuck very badly in traffic jam.By the time coach off loaded us at a point beyond which coaches could not go, it was already 5:30 PM and become very dark indeed. We had no hope of seeing the church. Nevertheless walked up to it, a distance of half a kilometre or so. We were greatly and very pleasantly surprised to see that church was still open. Apparently lot of tourist coaches were stuck in traffic jam. News had obviously reached Church authorities who decided to keep it open beyond the usual closing time. The church is built over a place where Christians believed is the cave where Virgin Mary lived and the place where angel Gabriel appeared to her and announced that she would conceive and bear the Son of God, Jesus – The announcement of angle telling this to Mary is known as Annunciation. The church is an imposing edifice of modernistic design. It was built in 1969. It is topped up by a very high grand cupola almost 179 ft high . A lantern is mounted on top of the cupola.
