Cisternoni di Albano — Attraction in Albano Laziale

Great water deposit from ancient time: it was built during the Roman empire to provide the city garrison with water and due to its quality and functionality, it has been used until recently. Now it's empty and can be vsited with a guide (free offer): to me it's a marvellous masterpiece of engeneering, which demonstrates how human intelligence can overcome great obstacles. You'll be surprised to see how deep it is, as well as solid and beautiful (even considered that it was partially digged into the ground). To me, it's even more beautiful than the nearby anfitheater (also partially digged into the rock). Been there in April 2023...

This almost forgotten and hardly marked place is perhaps one of the most interesting human engineering attractions of the area. #Cisternoni Progettati dagli architetti della Seconda #Legione #Partica intorno al 202 d.C., garantiva il rifornimento idrico ai Castra Albana e alle abitazioni circostanti. Era alimentata da due acquedotti che captavano l’acqua da sorgenti poste lungo il fianco del cratere del lago di #albanolaziale .

La sua importanza è data non solo dalle dimensioni (potendo raccogliere fino a 10.000 metri cubi di acqua), ma anche dal fatto che è tuttora funzionante. Fu infatti riutilizzata dal 1884 fino al 1912 come riserva di acqua potabile, ed in seguito per l’irrigazione di giardini e parchi.

La pianta risulta semi-rettangolare, lunga 47,90 m. da un lato e 45,50 m. dall’altro e larga 29,62 m. da un lato e 31,90 m. dall’altro, ed è divisa in cinque navate, con volta a botte sostenuta da 36 pilastri. È stata realizzata in parte scavando nel banco roccioso ed in parte in muratura, ed è rivestita da malta idraulica per rendere le pareti impermeabili (opus signimun).
