Museo degli Antichi Strumenti di Scrittura — Attraction in Catania

This museum is just as unexpectedly nice of a surprise as when you take your winter coat out of the closet after 10 months and you find that €50 bill inside it, which you'd completely forgotten about.

Mr. Salvio Panebianco (that's Italian for Whitebread - a name which makes total sense once you get to know him) will greet you upon entering - as amphytrion, usher and cerberus alike - and his welcoming words will oddly sound like a bizarrely pleasant massage around your shoulder blades, without even the slightest of physical touches. No need to feel weird about a charming, yet still unknown Sicilian man shampooing your knowledge by the sole use of his words - just dip yourself into it, cause it's worth it!

For what Salvio lacks in the skills of the English tongue, he makes up with a plethora of passion in which regards writing instruments and the fine art of handwriting. My ignorance vis-a-vis the correct finger that is to be held pencil-tip-closest turned his expression alas close to that of an Italian man seeing ketchup being poured on a pizza. But the initial shaming I felt when he placed a special pencil, for the writing beginners, in my hand soon turned into the feeling of a cool marshmallow rain in the humid heat of Catania. And if not writing fan, fear not - for Salvio is an expert in numerous other topics, from construction engineering, to arancina al ragù.

I was there in August 2024 with my cousin Adrian who, as I was soon to find out, was a writing instrument lover himself. He says the museum is very good, and I believe him cause he's a bigger fan than me. But the way Mr. Salvio embelished my craving for trivial knowledge shall live on further that handwriting, for his miscellanea truly are something Italians would call...

Ero così ansioso stamattina che alle 8,30 parcheggiavo la mia auto davanti all'ingresso delle Ciminiere. Non capita tutti i giorni di assistere all'inaugurazione di un museo degli strumenti di scrittura, anzi non capita proprio. Nelle cuffie musica jazz di Count Basie e via. Sorvolo sui saluti e vi racconto le mie impressioni. E tanto per non cambiare metodo dico i primi aggettivi: impressionante, maestoso, elegante, perfetto nell'esposizione. Oggi usiamo le tastiere e le penne sono diventate ostiche ai più ma se conoscessimo la storia della scrittura, conosceremmo anche quella dell'umanità. Le foto non restituiscono la bellezza di un'arte senza tempo che mani certosine e lungimiranti hanno messo da parte. Una strana sensazione, come avere il corpo presente e la mente in un altro tempo mi ha accompagnato e neanche i miei occhi abituati a vedere i particolari sono riusciti a trattenere ogni immagine, ogni minuzia, meraviglie di arte orafa che sono evidentemente fuori da questo tempo ma raccontano una storia che, se ci si sofferma, è proprio la nostra. Tutto è cominciato a Giarre, nella storica Edicola Panebianco che ai più certamente non dice nulla ma che fu crogiuolo di cultura, di sapere e , per me, pozzo di San Patrizio dei fumetti. Il Signor Panebianco, visto da me bambino, incombeva al di lá del bancone ma lo ricordo preparato, affabile e con me comprensivo. Oggi rimangono le foto in bianco e nero di quel tempo magnifico, quando economia e cultura, di pari passo, fiorivano nel nostro territorio. Un tempo dove le orchestre suonavano in piazza Duomo ed i vigili dirigevano il traffico da una rotonda al centro dell'incrocio. Oggi siamo moderni ma rischiamo di perdere la nostra storia e senza storia il nostro futuro sarà veramente vuoto e non rappresentativo dell'umanità. Grazie allora a Salvo Panebianco che è riuscito nel non facile intento di aver fatto perpetuare una passione, dandole nuova vita nel Museo degli antichi strumenti di scrittura, visitabile presso le...

I had a great time visiting this museum, would definetly recommend to anyone visiting Catania to visit.

I wouldn't consider myself a pen fanatic before visiting but I learnt more about pens and their history than I thought I could, it was very interesting niche museum.

The curator is lovely and his passion for the topic is infectious. There's alot of information to read in English and it was very satusfying to then try out some of the different fountain pens they had after learning about the mechanical advances through the years.
