This is the main city train station out of the 4 or 5 in the vicinity. Essentially only 3 platforms are in use regularly. You need to go down and round the underpass from within the station to cross between the platforms. There is a small but busy cafe just out with the main ticket office and waiting area inside. It is a fairly small station for such a large city which makes it easy to navigate and on our 2 visits we found it not to be busy at all. There are very nice views over the bay as it is located right on the seafront. I always advise arriving at least 15 minutes before your train to ensure you can buy your tickets if you didn't book online. At the south end of platform 1 there is a well restored and very old steam locomotive installed as decoration.

From the front of the station you can immediately see a small kiosk and a taxi rank. We saw a couple of temporary stalls. Walking to the left (south) there is a broad pathway that goes on for a few hundred meters and abruptly ends forcing you to...

Public transport at its worst.

We stood 40 minutes waiting for the bus to continue its planned trip. The bus driver was fully aware of this as we spoke to him about it. At the last minute the bus got rescheduled and the bus driver said there's nothing he could do and suggested to wait another hour for the next bus. He didn't even think of calling HQ to see if there might be a solution to our problem. The bus driver didn't show any responsibility and didn't seem to care much.

Perhaps the driver merely conveyed the message he got from upper management. But where I'm from such behaviour is a valid reason for being fired.

Reading other comments here it seems that on this spot if the earth nobody really gives a toss about customer service. For me that's a good reason to stay as short as possible in Catania.

We ended up getting a taxi. The taxi driver whitnessed the drama unfolding with a reassured kind if...
