BARADELLO CASTLE

The castle of Baradello is situated at the extreme southeast border of Spina Verde, in an elevated position which allows is wide view of the valley and the plain, and a strategic place for the control of the territory.

Several fortified structures have been built over time. The possibly pre-historical castle (Tito Livio reports the surrender of 28 "castella") also kept its defensive function In the Roman and Byzantine ages, the inner circle of walls dates back to the latter period.

During the 10-years war between (1118-1127), the Anonymous Cuman testified to the withdrawal of few inhabitants of Como to the fortified hill. In 1158 Federico Barbarossa authorised the rebuilding enlargement of the castle, where he stayed during military campaign against Milan. In 1176, after the defeat at Legnano, the emperor gave the castle to the Church and the Municipality of Como, recognition of the loyalty shown by the inhabitants of Como In the XII century' it saw the engagement between the Rusca Ghibellines (allied to the Visconti) and the Vitani Guelph (allied to the Della Torre) for the domination of the city. When Rusca prevalled, Napo Dela Torre part of his family were shut in cages and exposed the internal walls of Baradello. During the Visconteo period, tower and wall circle were raised.

Between XV and XVI century the caste fell into a progressive state of abandonment which culminated in 1527, when the Spanish imposed the dismantling of the fortification and only the...

About a 40 minute walk from the Como Camerlata train station. Which is One stop from the Como main station. The weather was not great when we did the walk with thick clouds and rain. Otherwise the views would have great. Most of the walk was steep, but thankfully very little traffic. The castle has been reduced to its keep. The keep can be accessed for 10 Euro per adult. There are four levels excluding the roof level. Each level had some artefacts on this history of the castle from Roman to medieval times. Our guide was knowledgeable and very happy to answer our questions. The roof would normally have fantastic views to Milan. Well worth the...
