If you're ever in Noli then make the effort to get up to the castle. It is a fascinating piece of history and the walkways that have been cleverly constructed around the walls allow you to see it from every angle. Francesco was more than happy to tell us about the history of the castle and his colleague in traditional dress gladly posed for photos. As a bonus, there are some spectacular views of the surrounding area and you should get to enjoy it in peace while everyone else is just sitting on the beach!

Splendid panoramic views of Noli and the sea. Entry only 2 euro pp, you can pay 4 euro pp and have a private guided tour with one of the volunteers. Nice little castle, we really enjoyed the tour and the views. The guide recommended us even a delicious restaurant where we had lunch later. Totally worth visit. We came via car, there is free parking just up from the castle if you don't want to climb up.

Nice castle with good views over Noli. The climb up from town is steep but doesn’t take to long. Remember to bring some water with you if you plan visit in the summer. A group of volunteers look after the castle and entry is modest €2 for adults and €1 for children. There is an elevator that takes you up to the top of the ramparts where you are rewarded with some panoramic views.

Il sito scelto per il castello è il Monte Ursino e nel 1004 si parla già di un Castrum Naboli, fortificato sull'esempio di molti altri insediamenti liguri che si premunivano nei confronti degli attacchi saraceni che andavano imperversando sulla costa. All'inizio la fortificazione era composta solamente da una torre d'avvistamento, ma andò ampliandosi fino al XV secolo quando con la sua cinta muraria riuscì ad abbracciare anche la parte del paese nata a valle quando non fu più necessario vivere in altura. La nascita della fortificazione non aveva avuto una funzione esclusivamente di protezione nei confronti della popolazione; rientrava nel programma di una casata, i Del Carretto, un ramo staccatosi dalla famiglia dei Clavesana e che aveva iniziato a costruire un proprio potentato. La vera funzione del castello era, infatti, di controllare sia il mare e la costa sia la vecchia strada romana passante in collina nella località di Voze e utilizzata sino al XVIII secolo. La sua importanza crebbe con quella di Noli come potenza marinara, dimostrata dalla partecipazione alla prima Crociata (1096-1099).

I really enjoyed walking up the hill to reach the Castle. You can walk along old houses and there is a beautiful view of Noli. There are different type of Mediterranean plants that you can see and smell. Otherwise it was Sunday (08/11/2020) and the castle was closed (due to the coronavirus), but I don't think there is much to see inside.

The path to the Castle (along side the walls) was a bit steep but luckily we followed another path down that wasn't so steep. The castle itself was pretty to see, and especially the view from here. You can oversee the sea and the cities Noli and Spotorno. We loved the knight outfit of one man of the staff!
