Innanzitutto sfatiamo un mito: è una delle attrazioni create ad hoc per gli ospiti dell'antica casata ma comunque non è quello che era nelle loro intenzioni e che vedete oggi, a coronamento del canale superiore che era in realtà l'unico corso d'acqua artificiale creato a uso e consumo degli ospiti (il laghetto era quello superiore, il cd laghetto del Giglio, alimentato dalla superiore omonima fontana e che potete vedere - uno schifo per ora - affacciandovi dalla balaustra della stessa). Questo è di origine naturale ma è stato (non è stato creato appositamente dal personale del Servizio Giardini del Comune di Roma nel 1965 quando il parco venne reso fruibile e aperto al pubblico nella parte cosiddetta "A valle"): anche questo alimentato dall’Acquedotto Traiano-Paolo lungo un percorso ricco di cascate le e zampilli (ora non più visibili e funzionanti, purtroppo) ha forma ellittica e con un isolotto al centro. Il Lago di origine naturale, nel corso dei lavori sugli impianti idrici del 1852 eseguiti da Busiri Vici venne modificato e ampliato. Questa stupenda oasi naturalistica offre scorci spettacolari e ospita moltissime specie faunistiche e vegetali, alcune specie di uccelli migratori vengono qui a svernare. Il percorso per arrivare offre suggestivi scorci con alcune panchine per ammirare e rilassarsi. Assolutamente da vedere, sebbene purtroppo soffra moltissimo anche questo di incuria e, soprattutto negli ultimi tempi, di siccità ma merita rispetto e cura da tutti i frequentatori (quindi attenti a cani e bambini affinché non infastidiscano le specie presenti come cigni, anatre, colombi e tartarughe, NdR).
