The Catacombs of Priscilla are located along the Via Salaria in Rome and date back to the 2nd–4th centuries AD. They were used for Christian burials during a time when Christianity was still illegal in the Roman Empire. They are named after Priscilla, a noblewoman from the Roman gens Acilia. According to tradition, she was a Christian and donated part of her family estate to be used as a burial ground for fellow believers. These catacombs are especially important for: • Their rich Christian frescoes, including the oldest known image of the Madonna and Child, painted in the 3rd century. • The Greek Chapel, a famous chamber with biblical scenes (such as the sacrifice of Isaac and the Last Supper). • Tombs of several early popes and martyrs, including Pope Marcellinus and Pope Marcellus I. • Use of loculi (small burial niches), arcosolia (arched tombs), and even family crypts. During persecutions, these spaces were not just for burial but also served as places for worship and refuge.

The tour was amazing and informative. Ours went a little long at 55 minutes and was packed full of interesting information about the history of catacombs from the early inception in 3rd century AD up to the present where it’s run by the Vatican. I’m not doing it justice but it has been a highlight for me. We pre booked the English tour and may not have needed to, though the tours just before and after ours looked quite full so probably is recommended. Note photos are not allowed inside. Facility wise, they have two clean toilets and some seating at the beginning but not inside. The air is a little stale as it’s underground but it’s fairly well lit and has a decent path, and not really claustrophobic inside. It’s a little far north but easily accessible by taxi or bus.

This is an amazing place to visit during your stay in Rome. Our English guide was fantastic and knowledgeable and we got to see paintings from the 2nd and 3rd centuries, plus learn a lot of interesting facts about the early Christians and these ancient burial grounds. The tour is even great for kids (ages 13 and 10 with us) - they also really enjoyed it. Unfortunately you cannot photograph the catacombs but they are super interesting and very, very dark in some places. The ground is dirt but packed in tight so it's pretty stable. 10/10 recommend (PS: Bar Crema a couple blocks away, recommended by our guide, had the best pistachio crossing I've ever had in my life)

We had a really wonderful visit at the Priscilla Catacombs. Clara, our English-speaking tour guide, was extremely sensitive to our needs. I can sometimes feel claustrophobic, and Clara did everything to reassure me, telling me there is every opportunity, including at the very start of the tour, to go back (be escorted back by a staff member) to the main lobby should I ever feel uncomfortable or unable to continue. She was very human and caring, and very open to discussing the catacombs and one’s experiences of going through them. She was also very knowledgeable, and the tour, which I easily completed in the end, was very pleasant.

The sisters, who are the custodians of these Catacombs and who were also very present on-site, were also wonderful to speak to and to interact with. After wishing to buy (donate money for) some music CDs, the sisters offered us some additional reading/magazines for us to take home, for free. We chatted for a while as they were very attentive and open to discussing our experience with us. They even allowed us to access and say a prayer in the chapel, which is found on-site.

I highly recommend these very interesting catacombs. It contains interesting frescoes on some of the tombs inside.

All the best from...

The truth is that Catholics really hid there to celebrate holy Mass and receive the Eucharist to have the strenght to continue striving in holyness and face paganism during the persecutions. As they were persecuted, they could not meet in the city to celebrate Mass, which would have resulted in capture and martyrdom.

Unfortunately, the guides voluntarily omit to show Saint Philomena's tomb because they don't believe in the infallibility of canonizations. Saint Jean-Marie Vianney, the father of Ars, attributed all his miracles to her intercessions. Pauline Jaricot was miraculously healed through her intercession and this was recognized by Pope Leo XIII. All the miracles in Mugnano del Cardinale also give authority to Saint Philomena's intercession. Saint Philomena was such a humiliation to Diocletian that it is no wonder why the devil tries to remove her from the tradition. It is therefore required to specifically ask the guides to stop before her tomb (and to pray for their conversion) otherwise the most precious place of the catacombs...
