Piazzale delle Corporazioni — Attraction in Rome

Amazing! This was once the corporate complex of Ostia Antica that included the theater. It was an open shopping forum. You can't visit the archeological site without finding this treasure.

The mosaic guild signs for each storefront are very well preserved. You can pretty much see what each store offered just by looking at the floor designs displayed at the entrances. You'll also see great views of the theater as you're walking along the square.

The observation point at the theater was closed due to restoration in May 2025. I totally recommend viewing the entire complex from the top of the theater when it reopens.

Great to see Roman city life so easily, you walk and walk, climb stairs and see everything for yourselves. It was a city of around 50.000 people and around 17.000 of them were slaves. You can easily recognise the communal baths and toilets to theatre and merchant places. Should be at your 10 great things to do around Rome list. Also great for kids because you can see everything for yourself, our kids loved it. Kids have free entrance and the fee for adults was only €8 in 2016. Purtroppo (o per fortuna) potreste capitare nei mesi invernali, quando i preziosi mosaici vengono ricoperti per proteggerli da intemperie e sbalzi termici e quindi non ammirare pienamente la bellezza del luogo. E io stavolta sono stato sfortunato. Comunque l'importanza del sito è percepibile a prescindere, pur senza vedere quei mosaici che raccontano la storia del luogo e che costituiscono una testimonianza anche visiva di alcune pratiche (tra i più famosi ci dovrebbe essere quello che descrive il trasbordo delle merci). E' una vasta area rettangolare (il lato lungo sono oltre cento metri, NdR) che aveva un portico: venne progettato insieme al teatro all'epoca di Augusto ma solo all’epoca di Claudio (metà I secolo d.C.) vennero aggiunti i portici e più tardi venne eretto al suo centro un tempio rialzato dedicato a qualche divinità ancora incerta. Successivamente il portico venne raddoppiato e vennero identificate le aree dei vari ambienti (una sessantina) dedicati alle varie corporazioni commerciali presenti (non è un caso che durante il ventennio proprio questo piazzale venisse preso come modello artistico e organizzativo, quando le corporazioni ripresero vigore). Si ritiene che il piazzale, il portico, il tempio e il teatro fossero un tutt'uno non solo come architettura ma anche come complesso funzionale e che questi mosaici fossero una sorta di insegna pubblicitaria che i soggetti privati infatti finanziavano. Lo troverete o venendo dalla via degli scavi o deviando a destra sul decumanto in corrispondenza del Teatro che ne costituisce una quinta ideale. Utili info?
