Baths of Neptune — Attraction in Rome

The mosaics in the Baths of Neptune are not to be missed when exploring the archeological site of Ostia Antica. It would have been easily missed if not for the map I purchased for a few euros at the ticket office. It also helps to listen to the Rick Steves' audio guide prior to your visit.

OSTIA ANTICA TERME DI NETTUNO

colpiscono per le vivaci scene marine che si susseguono in più ambienti comunicanti. Raffigurano il dio Nettuno su una quadriga di ippocampi e la sua sposa Anfitrite tra Nereidi, Tritoni, amorini, delfini e perfino Scilla, il terribile mostro incontrato da Ulisse nel suo viaggio. In questo edificio pubblico, voluto da Adriano nel 139 d.C., i mosaicisti hanno tradotto con grande maestria modelli ellenistici, riuscendo a rendere il movimento delle figure, come nei quattro cavalli marini della quadriga che sembrano “trascinati in direzione diversa dalla loro stessa irrefrenabile corsa”.
